Easy install with no leaks
I wasn't pleased with flow rate from the existing Brita filter and having to discard relatively expensive and hard to find twist-on cylinders of plastic into the landfill. The installation of the GE filtration system was straight forward and involved threading 3/8 inch WATTS quick connect adapters (PL-3826) to each side of the filter after wrapping each with Teflon tape. I purchased the WATTS adapters locally for about $10 total. I then inserted the 3/8 inch plastic water lines that connected to the water valve and the faucet under the sink (I was able to reuse the existing water lines). Mounting the filter base only required installing 2 screws in the backboard of the sink cabinet. Be certain the backboard is stout enough to support filter system and locate it so as to facilitate later replacing the filter. The GE filter canister accepts several different types replacement filters depending on your filtration needs. Placing the filter in the canister and threading it on presented no issues (or leaks) but I did purchase the GE plastic wrench which helped. The flow from the faucet has notably increased and the water quality is equal to or better than with the other filter. The GX1S01R does not come with connectors, water line or a filter but 2 mounting screws are included.

under sink filtration
I added 0.5 micron filtration to my kitchen sink. I installed a faucet, and connected up with 3/8 tubing and push-to-connect fittings. This GE housing is the same as the others you'll find, but it's also one of the least expensive, a no fills solution. It's high quality, and will last forever. You can use the fancy GE filter media, or just get a 0.5-micron carbon block filter. I put a bit of plumber's grease on the o-ring and on the threads so it will easily tighten down by hand and not leak.

Really makes our life better
I have used this unit in another home and loved it then and no change now. We use it for our drinking water at the kitchen sink. My wife is English and she drinks tea repeatedly during the day. Before I installed this filter we could smell chlorine when the water was boiling in the kettle. After I installed this the water does not have any smell when boiling and taste better and smoother. There is a kit you can buy for the supply connections but I just pick up what is needed at the local hardware store. Two reducing nipples and one supply line. I use a longer supply line if mounting to the back wall so I can just lift the filter up from the mounting screws and bring it out to the front of the cabinet to change out the filter cartridge. Either that or install along the front/side of the cabinet for easy access but then it can be in the way. There are various filter cartridges you can buy for this filter depending on exactly what you want taken out of the water. Much less expensive than reverse osmosis or water softners. GE also makes a dual water filter that looks like two of these side by side if you want particles removed and are worried about smell from chlorine or other chemicals.

MAJOR DESIGN FLAW? : GE's GX1S01R
GE’s GX1S01R drinking water filtration unit appears to have a major design flaw. A standard GE, “C” type filter, specified for this unit, did not fit in the unit. A week ago I purchased a GE GX1S01R from the Home Depot along with a GE filter specified to work with it (GE: FXUTC). I mounted the unit under my kitchen sink. Before installing the FXUTC filter, I tested the unit for leaks and it worked fine. Upon installing the filter, something immediately looked wrong. The sump would not screw all the way into the head, leaving about an eighth of an inch bigger gap between the two assemblies than with no filter installed. I checked several times to make sure the filter was properly aligned in the sump and then tightened it as much possible with a sump wrench. When I turned the water supply side on, it shot out of the gap and all over the place. I purchased another GE FXUTC filter to make it wasn’t a flaw in the original filter: same results. Then I purchased a second GX1S01R filtration unit from Amazon to reduce the possibility of a one-time manufacturing defect. SAME RESULTS: GE SPECIFIED FILTER (FXUTC) DID NOT FIT INTO THE GE GX1S01R DRINKING WATER FILTRATION UNIT. Which leads me to the conclusion that the GE GX1S01R water filtration system has a major design flaw. I believe GE recently redesigned the unit and kept the same model number. Therefore reviews and star ratings of the product may not be a true reflection for the redesigned units. And there are other ONE-STAR reviews on Amazon that complain about the same issue I’m describing here. Also, beware of the “quick fix” described by at least one Amazon reviewer of this product. “Ditching” one of the rubber gaskets on a GE “C” type filter may appear to solve the problem (no more external leaks.) But this probably brakes the internal seal between the input of the filter and its output. Thus, inside the unit, unfiltered water takes the path of least resistance, going around the filter and into the drinking water output. ~Ted

My Second One
WE had the first version of this filter housing for over 25 years and love its simplicity for a great under-sink filtration system. I accidentally broke the mounting bracket on our old one and found this unit as an exact replacement. We use the FLUX... filter unit, the second best one available for this housing and get consistently clean water that tastes excellent especially when compared to our normal tap water. Over the years this filter, even with periodic element changes, paid for itself over and over again over purchasing bottled water. I'm only giving it 4 stars for installation ease and value because it was not provided with the required mounting tubing and connections required for hookup, which would have bee worth a couple of extra bucks. The corresponding hookup kit and a sink nozzle accessory will need to be sourced and purchased separately for a new installation, but a still worth it.

Works great. Only issue was getting a seal on the inlet port (3/8 female NPT thread). Had to really torque in a brass fitting, but now it seems fine.
