Review: GMAT Genius’ Detailed Analysis of the 2016 Official Guide - The publishers of the GMAT Official Guides had asked GMAT Genius to help them improve the online versions of the Official Guides. GMAT Genius worked closely with the publishers in this effort in the weeks leading up to the release of the 2016 editions. This has given us an opportunity to thoroughly analyze the 2016 Official Guide, and we want to share our insights with you. Feel free to read our detailed analysis or to skip down to our conclusions. OVERVIEW The Official Guides for GMAT Review contain retired real GMAT questions, and are an essential component of your GMAT preparations. The GMAC places questions in order of increasing difficulty, based on its assessment of difficulty. This book has no overlap of practice questions with the Quant and Verbal Official Guides. Unlike the 2015 edition, which contained no new questions, the 2016 edition contains 201 new questions out of the 907 total questions. Excluding the 100 questions in the Diagnostic Exam section of the book, the new questions represent 25% new content as promised by the GMAC. These are brand new questions that we have not encountered before; they are not questions recycled from older GMAC resources. PROBLEM SOLVING This guide contains 254 Problem Solving questions, including the 24 Problem Solving questions in the Diagnostic Exam portion of the book. The GMAC classifies question difficulty into three categories as follows: Easy – 63 (18 more than 2015 edition) Medium – 60 (41 fewer) Hard – 131 (23 more) The Problem Solving section contains 57 new questions, with difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows: 21 / 24 / 12. This is in lieu of 57 questions from the 2015 edition that have been removed, with difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows: 12 / 20 / 25. A total of 45 questions have been assigned a different difficulty than they were in the 2015 edition. Specifically, 9 Medium questions have been downgraded to Easy and 36 Medium questions have been upgraded to Hard. GMAT Genius classifies question difficulty into five categories. This is in lieu of 31 questions in 6 passages from the 2015 edition that have been removed, with difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows: 3 / 8 / 20. In this edition, the GMAC has downgraded the difficulty level of 23 questions. GMAT Genius classifies question difficulty into five categories. Whereas the GMAC assigns the same difficulty to all questions for a given passage (except in the Diagnostic Exam section), GMAT Genius assesses the difficulty of each question individually. Our assessment skews slightly harder, but contains notable differences from the GMAC. Our difficulty assessment is only 48.9% correlated with the GMAC’s assessment, in large part due to different difficulty assessment methodologies. Here’s our breakdown: Super Easy – 5 (2 fewer than 2015 edition) Easy – 28 (4 more) Medium – 73 (2 fewer) Hard – 42 (same) Very Hard – 8 (same) We have grouped the questions based on the question type categorization that GMAT Genius uses for Reading Comprehension (as described on our website). Specific Reference and Inference questions continue to dominate, but Specific Reference declined noticeably. We break down the 156 Reading Comprehension questions as follows: Primary Purpose: 24 (1 more than 2015 edition) Author's Tone: 10 (2 more) Organization: 4 (1 more) Function: 20 (4 more) Specific Reference: 60 (8 fewer) Inference: 30 (same) Critical Reasoning: 8 (same) Here’s a list of the 31 new Reading Comprehension questions: 8 to 10, 42 to 47, 96 to 101, 107 to 112, 130 to 139 OTHER NOTES This Official Guide provides an 11-page overview of the Integrated Reasoning section, along with online access to 50 Integrated Reasoning practice questions. The IR set includes 12 new questions that we have not seen before, replacing 12 questions that were in the 2015 edition. The 50 questions consist of the following four types: Graphics Interpretation – 10 (4 changed) Multi-Source Reasoning – 18 (4 changed) Table Analysis – 6 (1 changed) Two-Part Analysis – 16 (3 changed) Here’s a list of the 12 new Integrated Reasoning questions: 12 to 15, 22, 29, 32, 33, 34, 44, 49, 50 The book contains a 40-page Math Review section that provides a very high-level overview of the math concepts tested on the GMAT. This math review will be highly inadequate except perhaps for the most advanced math students. Similarly, the brief introductions to the concepts tested on the verbal section are highly inadequate. We recommend that you use additional study materials to learn the math and verbal concepts. Although all questions include answer explanations, many GMAT test takers are far from satisfied with these explanations. Math explanations can be brief and hard-to-understand for non-advanced students, and are sometimes convoluted or inefficient. Most GMAT test takers consider the Sentence Correction explanations quite cryptic. The Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension explanations, however, are reasonably good overall. The book includes an access code that provides 12-month usage of an online version of this Official Guide. Since the GMAT is a computer-based test, we believe that it is advisable to work though the questions online. We recommend that you use Exam Mode rather than Practice Mode, since we recommend that students practice using timed question sets. The online practice interface has improved from last year’s version. The publishers implemented some of our recommendations, but they did not incorporate many of our functionality improvement suggestions. One major flaw that we discussed with the book publishers, but that has not been fixed, is the inaccurate timing for “Previous Sessions.” Timing statistics are accurate when you initially review a question set, but the timing per question data is inaccurate when you later access the same question set. If you already have the 2015 edition of this book, it is debatable whether the addition of 101 new math questions and 100 new verbal questions makes this book worth purchasing. Our opinion is that advanced students will not find enough additional challenging practice to justify the purchase, but other students could purchase the book for additional practice given the relatively low cost. CONCLUSIONS The Official Guide has three primary weaknesses, in our opinion: 1) An insufficient amount of difficult practice questions, particularly based on GMAT Genius’ assessment of difficulty 2) Math answer explanations that are too often either brief or convoluted and Sentence Correction explanations that are too cryptic 3) Inaccurate timing data for Previous Sessions and inadequate functionality in the online practice interface Despite its flaws, the Official Guide is an essential source of GMAT practice. We are pleased to see 25% brand new questions in the 2016 edition. We believe that every GMAT aspirant must use this book (or the prior edition). For these reasons, we give this book a 5-star rating. Review: Excellent Source of Official Questions with a Poor Quiz Engine (Medium Difficulty Mostly) - If you are new to the GMAT, get this book - you need it whether you study on your own or take a course. If you own a previous edition, and evaluating ROI, getting a Question Pack from GMAC's site is a better value ($30 for 404 questions in QP1). In case you are wondering about the question level/difficulty in this book - it is mostly Easy to Medium with few hard questions (not a bad thing necessarily) ~~~ Strengths ~~~ 1. Real GMAT questions retired from past tests - 900 real GMAT questions retired from past tests. 2. Online quiz engine allows you to build practice sets using the OG but it is very weak and cumbersome (more below) 3. Practice questions follow actual GMAT test patterns (it's great to have one's ear trained, esp. in verbal) 4. Overview of the Integrated Reasoning section (50 questions online) ~~~ Weaknesses ~~~ 1. The quiz system is too simplistic and cumbersome. For example I have no idea how to start working on question 10 or take only assumption questions for example, though it is an upgrade from the previous version... Perhaps I have been spoiled with good GMAT Prep and other CAT Test interfaces. I am struggling here. 2. Questions are EASY/MEDIUM difficulty in general (only about 5 questions are really a 750 level) based on GMAT Club member feedback. Here are the hardest ones: (V Diag 25, PS 218, DS 129, DS 131, DS 141). 3. Does not include any test-taking strategies. Though it has a few short review sections for each area, they are weak and very unfriendly 4. Questions are predominantly low to medium in difficulty which is often not representative of questions one encounters on the test 5. We really could have used some new questions. The official Guide questions are generally on the EASY side. 6. There is a 75% overlap with previous edition. 2015/13th Edition has an 83% overlap with the 12th edition. 12th edition has a 66% overlap the 11th edition. ~~~ Contents (number of questions per section - has remained unchanged since OG 13)~~~ 1. Diagnostic Test - 100 questions 2. Problem Solving - 230 questions 3. Data Sufficiency - 174 questions 4. Reading Comprehension - 139 questions 5. Critical Reasoning - 124 questions 6. Sentence Correction - 140 questions 7. Integrated Reasoning - 50 questions (not included in the 907 count) ~~~ HOW DO I STUDY WITH THIS BOOK? ~~~ In case it was not clear, you don't really study with it. You need other books to study and then you use this book for practice/quizzes. For example, you can get the Manhattan GMAT Set of Guides or the Veritas Prep Guides. These book sets come with 8-15 books that are targeting specific Math and Verbal areas. You have a much better chance getting a 700+ with those book sets (not guaranteed) but they also do require at least 2.5-3 months to cover them. The MGMAT Books come with 6 adaptive online tests. Veritas Prep books come with tests as well BUT only if you purchase from their website (Ugh). If you only have a month, you can get the Kaplan book set (Premier and Verbal/Quant workbooks if you need them - they can do the job done but not as exhaustive as MGMAT or Veritas Prep). ~~~ What are some of the good study suggestions? ~~~ - Start with a practice test (diagnostic test) - You need quality time. It is really the quality time (morning for some and evening for others) that provides the most retention and results - Don't skip or move past a section until you're able to solve 90% of the questions correctly (timed of course). That is if you want 700+ - Never solve questions without timing yourself (unless it is quick drills) - Don't jump into the hardest areas first - build confidence instead with what you know and can demonstrate progress at - Start every new day with the review of what you have learned the day before - Make notes for everything you cover - it helps tremendously to retain what you have learned even though you may never read them. The process of making notes is a very helpful learning experience. If nothing else works - use it - Finally, your practice tests are a usually a very good indicator of your performance. If you are getting 600 on your practice tests, there is about a 2% chance that you will get a 700 score. The 50 questions consist of the following four types: Graphics Interpretation – 10 (4 changed) Multi-Source Reasoning – 18 (4 changed) Table Analysis – 6 (1 changed) Two-Part Analysis – 16 (3 changed) Here’s a list of the 12 new Integrated Reasoning questions: 12 to 15, 22, 29, 32, 33, 34, 44, 49, 50 The book contains a 40-page Math Review section that provides a very high-level overview of the math concepts tested on the GMAT. This math review will be highly inadequate except perhaps for the most advanced math students. Similarly, the brief introductions to the concepts tested on the verbal section are highly inadequate. We recommend that you use additional study materials to learn the math and verbal concepts. Although all questions include answer explanations, many GMAT test takers are far from satisfied with these explanations. Math explanations can be brief and hard-to-understand for non-advanced students, and are sometimes convoluted or inefficient. Most GMAT test takers consider the Sentence Correction explanations quite cryptic. The Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension explanations, however, are reasonably good overall. The book includes an access code that provides 12-month usage of an online version of this Official Guide. Since the GMAT is a computer-based test, we believe that it is advisable to work though the questions online. We recommend that you use Exam Mode rather than Practice Mode, since we recommend that students practice using timed question sets. The online practice interface has improved from last year’s version. The publishers implemented some of our recommendations, but they did not incorporate many of our functionality improvement suggestions. One major flaw that we discussed with the book publishers, but that has not been fixed, is the inaccurate timing for “Previous Sessions.” Timing statistics are accurate when you initially review a question set, but the timing per question data is inaccurate when you later access the same question set. If you already have the 2015 edition of this book, it is debatable whether the addition of 101 new math questions and 100 new verbal questions makes this book worth purchasing. Our opinion is that advanced students will not find enough additional challenging practice to justify the purchase, but other students could purchase the book for additional practice given the relatively low cost. CONCLUSIONS The Official Guide has three primary weaknesses, in our opinion: 1) An insufficient amount of difficult practice questions, particularly based on GMAT Genius’ assessment of difficulty 2) Math answer explanations that are too often either brief or convoluted and Sentence Correction explanations that are too cryptic 3) Inaccurate timing data for Previous Sessions and inadequate functionality in the online practice interface Despite its flaws, the Official Guide is an essential source of GMAT practice. We are pleased to see 25% brand new questions in the 2016 edition. We believe that every GMAT aspirant must use this book (or the prior edition). For these reasons, we give this book a 5-star rating. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Source of Official Questions with a Poor Quiz Engine (Medium Difficulty Mostly)

If you are new to the GMAT, get this book - you need it whether you study on your own or take a course. If you own a previous edition, and evaluating ROI, getting a Question Pack from GMAC's site is a better value ($30 for 404 questions in QP1). In case you are wondering about the question level/difficulty in this book - it is mostly Easy to Medium with few hard questions (not a bad thing necessarily) ~~~ Strengths ~~~ 1. Real GMAT questions retired from past tests - 900 real GMAT questions retired from past tests. 2. Online quiz engine allows you to build practice sets using the OG but it is very weak and cumbersome (more below) 3. Practice questions follow actual GMAT test patterns (it's great to have one's ear trained, esp. in verbal) 4. Overview of the Integrated Reasoning section (50 questions online) ~~~ Weaknesses ~~~ 1. The quiz system is too simplistic and cumbersome. For example I have no idea how to start working on question 10 or take only assumption questions for example, though it is an upgrade from the previous version... Perhaps I have been spoiled with good GMAT Prep and other CAT Test interfaces. I am struggling here. 2. Questions are EASY/MEDIUM difficulty in general (only about 5 questions are really a 750 level) based on GMAT Club member feedback. Here are the hardest ones: (V Diag 25, PS 218, DS 129, DS 131, DS 141). 3. Does not include any test-taking strategies. Though it has a few short review sections for each area, they are weak and very unfriendly 4. Questions are predominantly low to medium in difficulty which is often not representative of questions one encounters on the test 5. We really could have used some new questions. The official Guide questions are generally on the EASY side. 6. There is a 75% overlap with previous edition. 2015/13th Edition has an 83% overlap with the 12th edition. 12th edition has a 66% overlap the 11th edition. ~~~ Contents (number of questions per section - has remained unchanged since OG 13)~~~ 1. Diagnostic Test - 100 questions 2. Problem Solving - 230 questions 3. Data Sufficiency - 174 questions 4. Reading Comprehension - 139 questions 5. Critical Reasoning - 124 questions 6. Sentence Correction - 140 questions 7. Integrated Reasoning - 50 questions (not included in the 907 count) ~~~ HOW DO I STUDY WITH THIS BOOK? ~~~ In case it was not clear, you don't really study with it. You need other books to study and then you use this book for practice/quizzes. For example, you can get the Manhattan GMAT Set of Guides or the Veritas Prep Guides. These book sets come with 8-15 books that are targeting specific Math and Verbal areas. You have a much better chance getting a 700+ with those book sets (not guaranteed) but they also do require at least 2.5-3 months to cover them. The MGMAT Books come with 6 adaptive online tests. Veritas Prep books come with tests as well BUT only if you purchase from their website (Ugh). If you only have a month, you can get the Kaplan book set (Premier and Verbal/Quant workbooks if you need them - they can do the job done but not as exhaustive as MGMAT or Veritas Prep). ~~~ What are some of the good study suggestions? ~~~ - Start with a practice test (diagnostic test) - You need quality time. It is really the quality time (morning for some and evening for others) that provides the most retention and results - Don't skip or move past a section until you're able to solve 90% of the questions correctly (timed of course). That is if you want 700+ - Never solve questions without timing yourself (unless it is quick drills) - Don't jump into the hardest areas first - build confidence instead with what you know and can demonstrate progress at - Start every new day with the review of what you have learned the day before - Make notes for everything you cover - it helps tremendously to retain what you have learned even though you may never read them. The process of making notes is a very helpful learning experience. If nothing else works - use it - Finally, your practice tests are a usually a very good indicator of your performance. If you are getting 600 on your practice tests, there is about a 2% chance that you will get a 700 score. This is the only guide that you will ever need to effectively navigate studying for the GMAT and achieve the score that you need for admittance into your dream school as a stepping-stone to your dream career.
