I've tried these on a few different surfaces. The only thing they were good for was mounting paper to cardboard.

I used these to hang multiple drawings for an art show. The walls were variable, some kind of hardboard and then something more porous. The mounting squares held up nicely on both surfaces for the entire duration of the show (and that was through some temperature fluctuations). When it was time to remove them, they did very little damage to the walls (maybe a tiny bit of paint removal on some), and no damage at all to the paper so long as I was careful when removing them. I will note that all the drawings were on bristol board, which is pretty stiff-- I am not sure how more delicate paper would fare. The foam meant that the drawings were up off the wall a tiny bit instead of being flush, which was something that I had wanted. Definitely will be going back to these the next time I have to hang work that can't be framed.

These Scotch mounting squares are great for mounting lightweight things like posters, signs, etc on walls. They're a removable alternative to the permanent double sided tape offered by 3M. I've used these on all sorts of items and typically you can remove them without a problem but I will note a couple of considerations: First if you put these on paper, you'll probably not be able to get them off. Laminated paper or smooth surfaces is no problem though. Next, if you cut them smaller, they don't hold together as well. These are not like double sided tape where the foam is consistent throughout the product. It's like two sticky sides with an open cell foam between them. The edge of the square is the area where the two sides are joined together. So cutting the square weakens the integrity of the foam structure. Finally, if you leave them on a surface for a long time (months and months) they might leave a sticky residue behind. This easily comes off if you rub it with your finger. I use these a lot and those are my only items of note. They are of the expected 3M quality (top notch).
