Vol. 4 is the fourth studio album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, originallyreleased in September 1972. It was the first album by Black Sabbath not produced by RodgerBain; guitarist Tony Iommi assumed production duties. It achieved gold status in less thana month, and was the band's fourth consecutive release to sell one million copies in theUnited States. Review: Best album ever - One of the greatest albums of all times by one of greatest artists of all time Review: Great Riffs classic album - My favourite Black Sabbath album. Why? So many great riffs sometimes more than one in the same song and all taken at a good rockin speed reminiscent of the first album as opposed tothe stoner funeral rock pace of tracks on Masters of Reality . A great ballad in 'Changes' and I think their best instrumental in 'Laguna Sunrise' which conjures up.exotic atmospheres not usually associated with the group. I personally think this is the great underrated Sabbath album which, while it has variety, has as already said some of their best riff songs. I often think it is under represented on 2 cd compilations. I much prefer it to the stoner downer rock of Master of Reality and I think song for song its better than 'Paranoid' even though that has at least four to five great songs.

Great sounding copy of vol 4 on vinyl
Great sounding copy of vol 4 on vinyl. Very punchy, 2016 coloured WB rhino. Had Paranoid on this reissue series also sounded very punchy but had a terrible hiss on planet caravan & iron man.

Word of warning. Ordering this twice now and each time I've received the right album cover but the vinyl is black and is not the right album! It was master of reality?! Really disappointed!

If you're trying to familiarize yourself with classic heavy metal music, this album is an absolute must-have for your collection. The Sabbath albums that probably get the most attention are the debut album and Paranoid, and even Master of Reality might be a little more well-known than this one, but Vol. 4 is personally my favorite Sabbath album with Ozzy Osbourne. Even though the band was deep into substance abuse during the recording of this album, I think the original lineup was at its musical peak here. Tony Iommi just has so many amazing catchy riffs and Bill Ward absolutely kills it on the drums. The most notable songs here are probably Tomorrow's Dream, Supernaut (a personal favorite of John Bonham), Snowblind, and Cornucopia. You'll also hear the band experimenting and going beyond their usual heavy metal sound at certain points, most notably with the song Changes. If you already own an older version of this album, you probably want to know what's different with this reissue. I have no complaints with these recent Warner remasters; I think they all sound awesome. All of the 2016 Warner reissues basically have the same packaging format as well, but this isn't a criticism. They all come in a fold-out digipak, and the CDs are printed to match the labels on the original Warner LP issues. They also include all the artwork included with the original LPs, and booklets that feature write-ups, original artwork for the album's singles, and pictures of the band. For as cheap as these reissues are now, I think they're a superb value. Long story short, I highly recommend you buy this album. I think Sabbath's first four albums are all superb, but I really think this is their best. If you already have an idea of what they sound like, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
