Does thoriated tungsten require precautions due to its thorium content?

Thorium oxide is a low level radioactive material which has a minuscule external radiation hazard and a small internal hazard from ingestion or inhalation. There is almost no release of radioactive material during arcing, so the only real issue is during preparation / grinding. We recommend the use of a dedicated grindstone on a grinder that has dust extraction capabilities. As with any tungsten grinding we also recommend the use of a simple filter mask and eye protection. Past that, we offer free samples of non-radioactive options that might be worth testing in any current welding application currently using Thoriated tungsten.

All tungsten electrodes are very hard and stiff. They do not bend without a lot of heat, they just break. It does however take a lot of effort to break them. Hope this helps.

Not thoriated

The rods I received are not thoriated as advertised. No reaction on my geiger counter, and the label differs from the listing. In the listing picture it say 2% thoriated, but the package label I received does not say thoriated. Also, the package had a mix of 3/32 and 1/16 instead of all the same size.
