## Description

Sony Xperia 5 unlocked smartphone OLED cinema wide display, 128GB - Black - (us )

Review: Zero Lag Flagship in a smaller form factor - For comparison, I own an array of relatively recent mid range android phones including the Sony Xperia 10 plus. I have daily driven this phone for around 9 months and I don't really have any major complaints. It's on Android 10, it's gotten regular software security updates as it should. I highly recommend this phone, especially if you have liked past Sony phones. One minor nit is that the phone is very slick and it is likely to take a fall off of a table or the couch. For that reason I do recommend a case for this phone, something I normally I don't do myself. Though my phone has survived a number of falls. Display: This is not my first 21x9 aspect ratio phone, so it feels normal to me. The screen is not the brighest in direct sunlight, but is visible at max brightness in that setting. When not in direct sunlight, the screen is very sharp. Not all apps take advantage of the extra screen real estate, but it's not something that has ever bothered me. I have only seen 1 or 2 apps that really it was noticeable. However, if you are an Instagram user (i am not) I believe it is one that looks a bit funky. Might want to check that out on youtube. General Performance: The Xperia 5 is super snappy and feels like the flagship device it is. I almost never notice any lag and the gestures work reliably. The screen is not the brightest in sunlight but otherwise is very nice. The biggest weak spot of this phone is the fingerprint reader. While it is better than the similar one on the 10 plus, it still fails enough to be annoying. Do not expect it read super fast or reliably. I still use it, it hasn't pushed me to using a pin, but it's noticeable and frustrating. I clean the phone regularly and that helps. Battery Life: I get over a day and never have to charge part way through the day. I'm a relatively heavy user, watching videos, playing some games, sending messages, browsing the web. A big knock on Sony's mid range phones is a sub 1 day battery life, that is not a problem on this device. Camera: The camera is nice, but it's interesting that it doesn't allow 21x9 photos because the display is 21x9 and this is something the camera on the Sony Xperia 10 plus offered. This may not be the best camera available (pixel), but it takes nice pictures and doesn't require the smoothest hand to get a clear shot. I don't take a ton of photos so my word here is for the novice. I didn't get blurry photos and the colors look good to me. Gaming: If you plan to do gaming on this phone, it is about as capable as you can find. Given the snapdragon 865 processor this shouldn't be a surprise, but I can confirm smooth gameplay in native android games and various emulators. Some Gamecube stuff doesn't run super well (Call of Duty), but others run fine (Mario Kart Double Dash and Timesplitters 2 for instance). PS2 emulation seems a ways off still. I am not one to spend hours tinkering with emulations setups, so you may be able to do better than I did.
Review: Compact phone with fantastic screen and good camera. - I'm really happy with this phone. I was planning to wait for the Xperia 1 ii, but realized that I rather wanted the slightly smaller size of the Xperia 5. It feels comfortable in one hand, and I personally like that it has an unusual form factor. The software can be updated to Android 10 and everything feels really smooth and snappy. The camera is no longer among the best in smartphones in 2020, but does a very good job. My main nit is that it doesn't shoot raw with the default camera app, and so you get the usual over-sharpened smartphone look. You can download Adobe Lightroom, which can shoot raw but isn't as convenient, and can only use the primary wide-angle lens. Hope Sony releases the upcoming Photography Pro app that will come with the Xperia 1 ii for the Xperia 5 as well. The fingerprint reader works flawlessly for me by the way. Not sure why a lot of people are having issues. One note of caution: the back of the phone is extremely extremely slippery. This phone absolutely needs a case. I like the Spigen case that you can find on desertcart. Another minor downside is that the Xperia 5 doesn't have wireless charging. But you can easily add one of those Qi charging receiver tags (and hide it under the case that you'll need anyway). This phone is exactly what i was expecting. Nice camera, an absolutely fantastic screen, reasonably compact size, and solid speed and battery life.

**Q: are there any xperia phones that will work with wifi calling? how about the new 1.1 coming out in 2020**
A: Hi, Willis!

Yes, there are Xperia phones that have WiFi calling feature. However, it is the network operator that decides if the model is able to use the feature.

In order to be able to make calls with Wi-Fi Calling, some conditions must be fulfilled:

- Your phone model must support Wi-Fi Calling.
- Your operator, subscription and SIM card must support Wi-Fi Calling.
- Depending on your operator, your phone may need to be operator-branded or use operator-customized system software.
- Your phone must be within the range of a Wi-Fi network.

To Enable Wi-Fi Calling:

For Android™ 9 or Android 8.0 OS:

Single SIM users:

Find and tap the Phone icon.
Tap the menu button (three vertical dots) → Settings > Calls → Wi-Fi Calling.
If Wi-Fi Calling isn't available, contact your network operator.
Tap the switch beside Off to enable Wi-Fi Calling.

Dual SIM users:

Find and tap the Phone icon.
Tap the menu button (three vertical dots) → Settings → Calling accounts → Select a SIM card → Wi-Fi Calling.
If Wi-Fi Calling isn't available, contact your network operator.
Tap the switch beside Off to enable Wi-Fi Calling.

For Android 6.0, 7.0, 7.1 or 7.1.1 OS:

From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.
Find and tap Settings → More → Wi-Fi Calling. If Wi-Fi Calling isn't available, contact your network operator.
Tap the switch beside Off to enable Wi-Fi Calling.
To make a Wi-Fi call, you need the recipient’s phone number.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great phone, bad fingerprint reader.
*by P***E on May 15, 2020*

Love this phone and sony in general. I watch a lot of movies on my this and it is truly awesome. Most of my videos are from the playstation store or Google play movies and are all in the correct aspect ratio to fill the whole screen and they look amazing. It is fast and capable and not too big for me. Battery life is fine and usually lasts me all day even with watching about an hour of video every day at lunch and playing Bluetooth music all day on my Sony speaker. The wide angle camera lense is awesome to have I take a lot of photos of landscapes that I make at work and I can now get much better shots of my projects. The only thing I don't like and why it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is the fingerprint reader. As others noted it is total garbage and almost never works. My last phone was a sony xz2 compact and that fingerprint scanner worked great every time. Really disappointing because I had gotten used to using fingerprint for all my apps instead of passwords. Overall not a deal breaker, I still love and recommend the phone.
