Can you easily tell it's on when you touch it? I just received mine today, it's been on for a few hours, and it doesn't feel warm to me!

The perch I ordered for my birds feels very warm to the touch. Not enough to harm them but they enjoy sitting on their swing resting their chests on it.

What size perch should I get for my Amazon?

There are multiple sites online to determine the size for your bird. I found this suggestion: Perch size for - African Greys, Amazons, Small Cockatoos, ... Large Perches 2.5cm to 3.8cm

Since this is a low voltage (perch side of the transformer) any chance that running this device through a lamp dimmer (AC side) would help to control the heat level, say something capable of handling a 300-500 watt halogen bulb?

Use a thermometer controller not a dimmer. If you need the cage temperature to be an escargot temperature then get a heater with temperature controller. It’s no efficient to put a regulator on this perch since it is for an open cage you’d be heating the entire room.

Has anyone bought one of these that started out heating properly but later got too hot?

When the Thermo-Perch is first plugged in, it will get warmer than normal. The thermostat will regulate itself and cool down to a normal temperature within an hour or two. The temperature along the perch will range anywhere from approximately 99°F to 108°F. The end closest to the cage will feel warmer than the other end. Also, many people believe the perches are too warm, but birds have a normal body temperature of 106°F and need more heat than humans who have a body temperature of 98.6°F.
