Can I use its radio as a wakeup system?

Yes either alarm or radio wake up. I do not have the user manual available. Two clocks I re call.

I can't get any talk on any band. What am I doing wrong? will it auto scan all bands?

There are several ways to scan the bands, the easy way is to use the two buttons for reviewing up and down the band being sure you pick the bands first such as AM or FM. then let the radio go through the band and let it ID the stations fist. You might want to review the instructions first regarding this radio and it has so many features. Also check that the volume is high enough . Its a great radio but it can eat up AA batteries.

Does this radio have a socket for an external antenna?

I have soldered a wire near the base of the whip antenna. Works like a charm. A good radio on my 10m wire

how long does the fully charge battery last?

It really depends on brand and capacity of the rechargeable batteries you use. I purchased some highly rated 2800 mah rechargeable batteries to use in the radio and I can use it between 1 and 2 hours a day for almost a week and a half, sometimes longer. If you don't use the radio that often it should retain a charge for the clock which runs continually, for much longer. I have had mine sitting for over a month with still over half a charge whenever I went to use it. Purchase good quality, high power rechargeable batteries and you should have good results.
