First Animal Encyclopedia (Dk First Reference) [DK] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. First Animal Encyclopedia (Dk First Reference) Review: Great photos, fun learning - This book has been great for introducing biology to my young boys. They have learned about the major classifications of animals and what differentiates vertebrates from invertebrates, mammals from reptiles etc. The information is very basic but the kids love the pictures and information so much that we've gone through it multiple times. At the bottom of each page is a trivia question. These are fun but there is no image of the animal in question so it falls short for us. There's always the internet but it would be nice if the trivia question was about one of the animals discussed on that page. Review: Good, solid kids encyclopedia - This encyclopedia is a good introduction into the animal kingdom. It does read well and the illustrations and imagery are well done. The categories make looking up animal groups a breeze. There is enough detail and close ups on the smaller animals, which really helps with understanding the animals. Even the ridiculous representation of the T-Rex found in the Big Dinosaur Book by DK makes a cameo, which we found amusing. Overall a worthy purchase, promising long use.

Perfect for younger students doing classical education
I bought this book to attempt Science with my first grader the way it is described in "The Well Trained Mind" by Susan Bauer. I was a little skeptical at the minimal science recommended but my 6 yr old is learning a ton. She picks out animals to read about, she gladly tells me, and everyone else she meets, these details all week. Science has become her favorite subject and she is retaining everything from week to week.

Great starter encyclopedia for young readers.
I bought this for my oldest a year or two ago for Christmas and it was and still is a huge hit. In fact this is one of those books he insists on taking with him on longer drives or trips. He loves animals, dinos, etc. So this book was perfect for him, gave him pictures, basic information and other little bits and pieces about each animal. He loves to look up animals he sees and finds outside and learn more about them. If your child loves to learn more than just a name and recognize a picture I think this will be a great first start.

4 year old loves this book
A friends 2-year-old has this book. My granddaughter fell in love with it! I was reluctant to buy this for a 4-year-old, thinking that she already knows her animals. But it has a lot of information for her, beautiful photos, and actually shows the relationships between species, etc. She's now 5 and still pulls it out regularly, wanting to read it together. I highly recommend it. It's a very special book.

Great resource
As a beginner resource to teach the basics about the animal kingdom this book is fantastic. The pictures are great as well as all the fun facts. My kids look in it for "just a second" and then get hooked by all that's in there and the next thing you know 10 minutes has gone by and they spent it learning more and more about animals of all kinds.

Perfect
This was purchased to take on a mission trip to Haiti. The children at the orphanage mostly speak Haitian-Creole, so we wanted a book that would help them learn new information and the language would be simpler to translate. This book was a favorite by the children because of its great pictures!

Like virtually all of the DK books I have seen, this one is exceptionally well done. We are using it for gr. 3 homeschool biology. It covers each of the animal groups (mammals, reptiles and so on) quite thorough and is very engaging. The pictures are bright and fun and the text is in small, easily digestible chunks. I think the amount of information is just right for my daughter, though I can see that younger kids would probably find it quite fun as well. I'd imagine kids older than gr. 5 or so would like it too, though they might be looking for more detailed information.
