7 YRS and still going

We purchased this intex trolling motor with the Excursion 5 raft 7 yrs ago. We have used this trolling motor 7 years quite heavily. It is durable and reliable. We have hit rocks, accidentally, without damage to the propeller. No rust or issues. All original parts. It’s quiet and strong enough to push the raft with 4 adults not only in calm waters, but also stormy waves. I just wish the excursion 5 was just as durable. We are on our 3 raft.

First time using it in 3 years, Bucket Test Worked Well

I bought this new when I bought my Excursion 5 about 3-4 years ago and have not used the trolling motor at all since it first arrived. I was skeptical about it working when I pulled it out the other day due to all the reviews stating it only runs for a few seconds and then shuts off - mine did too when I did a "dry" run the other day. I've read that these electric motors are cooled by the water so I got a large plastic tub and filled it with water and put the motor down in the water and switched it to low or 1. Viola - it worked great! I ran it on 1 - 5 and no problems at all, no shut downs occurred and it definitely churned up the water exceptionally well. This 3 - 5 second shut off everyone is complaining about, appears to be a safety feature so that you don't burn up the motor. To test your trolling motor, first put the motor down in water and then try it and I believe you will realize it does work and it works great. Now it is FISHING TIME! I do highly recommend this trolling motor from Intex.

Perfect

I tested in a barrel of water. Haven't used on my boat yet. I plan to use on my intex inflatable.

4.7 MPH on a Mariner 3

I bought this motor for my Intex Mariner 3 to cruise around a medium sized lake. The motor has plenty of power to push the boat around, and charges through rough seas with ease. On fairly rough water with a slight tailwind, I achieved 4.7 mph (4 knots) on speed 5 with a payload of 370 lbs (2 people and a group 27 deep cycle battery). Speed 1 is good for about 1.5 mph in calmer water, but the boat handles best in 2 or 3. Battery life was very good. After 2 hours on the lake, the battery gauge was in the yellow (actually about 80% charge when I placed the battery on the charger). About a third of that was spent racing along at top speed. A more conservative pace will easliy make a battery last a whole day. If you own a Mariner 3 (or any Intex boat), this motor is much better than paddling. Overall materials quality is better than I expected given the low price. The handle and mount are made of plastic, but are rigid and operate smoothly. The propellor is also plastic, so be careful when setting it down to avoid chipping the blades. Thanks to Intex, I have a fully functional motorized boat for a total of $550. Just remember to register your boat at your DMV!

Don't Purchase It is a POJ

I have had this motor for less than a year, and I am not happy with it. First time I used it the twist throttle control came loose and almost created a disaster on the water. Sent it back, purchased another. First time new one used the throttle came loose again and I put a clamp on it and it worked fine 2 times. Cold weather came and I stored it in my garage. Spring came and I took it to the lake and after shoving off the dock turned it on and it only would run 2-3 seconds and them shut off. Was not the battery but the same problem others have reported which is run for 3 seconds, then shut off. Run for 3 seconds, then shut off. Repeat, repeat. Was stuck in middle of lake and took over an hour to get back to dock. Warranty is only 90 days which is amazing to me for the price. Also, if you go to the Intex web site no mention of trolling motors. I will be buying a Minkota to replace this awful product. BUYER BEWARE.

Tough motor

Don't usually take time to write reviews. It's free advertising for companies and I hate that, yet I'm glad there was some seemingly non-paid reviews & info [all over the web] to help me make a good shot at getting equipment to get the job done. In this case... fun... with some unexpected challenges. We just took a maiden voyage with this motor on an Intex Mariner 4 loaded to 485lbs of 2 people, stuff, an Optima 55 Amp-Hour Deep-Cycle Blue top battery charged on a Schumacher SE-70MA Fully Automatic Deep-Cycle Charger. >> Don't believe it if someone tells you the new battery you just bought is "fully" charged, not only are they "partial charge," special chargers for deep cycle make a BIG difference for battery performance on "every outing" and its life. This info comes from a professional electrical background and people in Forums.<<The trip was 3 miles of winding 30-50ft wide max creek width [out to a lake] with weeds growing to the top in many areas. Did some rowing from the back seat [pushing forward on oars] through the total weed coverage areas on the trip out to discover undergrowth & obstacles and the paddles worked ok. 40 % of the trip out was ok to troll on speed 1 or 2 without sucking up weeds [average 2-4 foot depth]. We found inflating the 5th air compartment or "keel" [adds v-shape to bottom] was giving us trouble getting across the shallow weedy surface so we deflated it and then had a "flat bottom" boat.On the way back we raised the motor/prop so the prop top was spinning above the water line, the bottom half of the propeller in the water. We "chopped" our way back through the weed areas quite well. We surprised the crap out of some Kayakers we met along the way asking how we could possibly get through this creek, they had never seen anything other than a "hand paddle" boat in there. In the clear areas we dropped the prop a few inches below the boat, dialed to 5 [top speed] and were surprised to find the bow lifting and a wake behind us. More than I expected from this motor on that inflatable boat loaded half of max weight [880max]The Mariner 4 & Intex motor hit the spot, very glad we bought them, and the Optima AGM "totally sealed" deep cycle battery. It was well worth the $240.00 Battery to travel 3.5 hours through that kind of load [weeds cause heavy current draw on the battery] and top speed when we weren't in them and a 20% charge still left, according to a digital volt meter. 15 hours of research looks worthwhile now. Hope this can save someone anxiety trying to figure out which of what to get. The Mariner 4 is a great feeling boat too. Their design is hard to believe for the price. Truly happy with the combo. You do have to be aware "THE BATTERY METER ON THE MOTOR IS VERY CONSERVATIVE" designed to make sure you get home before the Battery dies. We made 70% of the return trip with the battery meter on the lowest of its 4 lights, 25% and in the red zone. During that time we ran the motor through 90% of the previous rowing areas, chopping our way across the top of the weeds. And - two people and 6 hours worth of stuff is about all we would want in that boat! Also, even the the Mariner 4 comes with a hand pump we used a Coleman blower for inflation/deflation which worked painlessly.go4h2o
