## Description

Provides two 2. 5 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to Mac Pro towers and Windows PCs. Simple way to add or expand 2. 5 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to any compatible computer. It is suitable for multiple market segments and emerging applications, such as desktop, mobile, workstation, server, communications platforms, and embedded applications.

Review: Drop in and works under Linux with default drivers (Debian 11/12) - I have three of these in a Proxmox cluster of machines, and all of them have worked out of the box with no issues. Repeat iperf3 tests has them pushing full speed without complications.
Review: Works on FreeBSD if you install kernel module - I wanted it for the uplink on my cable router to match my cable modem's ability to push 2.5 Gbps (even though I only get 1.5 Gbps service). The motherboard's stock ethernet port is only 1Gbps, so I used it for initial configuration. Using FreeBSD 13.1, I got it to work with pkg install realtek-re-kmod And adding if_re_load="YES" if_re_name="/boot/modules/if_re.ko" to /boot/loader.conf A little annoying that it doesn't work out of the box on my particular operating system use case, but that's not really the card's fault, so not docking stars for that.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Has anyone used this card with pfsense?**
A: I am using it now in a Pfsense server. Out of the box 5his card will not work with 2.4.5 p1. You will either need to manually integrate the new drivers in to the latest release or you can upgrade to 2.5 snapshot developmental release.

Other option is to use Opnsense, which their latest stable build should support this card out of the box.

**Q: Why didn’t syba put heat sinks on the rtl8125 chips? i’m seeing a lot of posts talking about throttling and erratic behavior from over heating.**
A: a few reviews dating as far back as Aug 2021 say this card was updated and now includes a heatsink.
but here it is 2023 and still the ad shows the [old] non-heatsink model card.
I don't think the Seller is very serious about marketing this product.

it appears from one review's photos that the heatsink doesn't cover the pair of RTL8125 ethernet chips
instead, it covers the ASM1182e chip, which is a 2-to-1 PCIe 2.0 "packet switch".
(assuming that's still on the board and wasn't updated to a better suited PCIe 3.0 switch).

.

**Q: What pcie generation is it?**
A: PCIE 2.0 x1 lane
you can barely make out in one of the ad photos it has an ASM1182e chip.
the ASM1182e is a 2-to-1 PCIe 2.0 "packet switch".
the pair of RTL8125 ethernet chips connect through it, to one single PCIe lane.

since the pair of 2.5GbE running concurrently "could" transfer 5Gbps
but PCIe 2.0 lane speed is 5Gbps with 8b/10b encoding, 20% overhead
the max combined ethernet transfer is only 4Gbps.
or less.

you'll see a few Reviews here from people who caught on - that it can't produce 5Gbps.

**Q: Can the ports be aggregated in windows? will it work with smb3?**
A: The ports for this card can't be aggregated.
