SPEAKING CLEARLY
The book is a succinct read that offers practical solutions for children and adults suffering from articulation disorders. At the outset, the author presents an overview of speech problems. She describes the four types of articulation disorders: substitutions, omissions, distortions, and additions. Next Weston discusses diagnoses such as autism, apraxia, neurological disorders, auditory processing, hearing loss and selective mutism. But the meat of the book consists of the strategies section. Weston presents simple, effective, common sense strategies like picture cards, board games, building blocks, blowing bubbles, and reading out loud. She suggests everyday activities that can be customized as learning opportunities like bath time and travel outings with the family. Suggestions for adults with articulation disorders include drinking through straws, mirror activities, playing the harmonica, and whistling with candy in the mouth. Weston suggests a twenty-day improvement timetable but reminds her readers that anyone pursuing speech therapy must have a positive attitude toward success, realize that improvement will be slow but steady, and set realistic goals ahead of time. As a special educator who has worked side by side with speech, occupational, physical therapists and children, I have used many of these techniques and would encourage readers to try them. I received a copy of this book from the author and voluntarily decided to read and review it with my honest opinions for no compensation.

Not what I had hoped for
Over half of the book was about causes of speech disorders, instead of actual strategies.. page 24 and 25 are the only strategies in the whole book, which were really just common sense that most would know already. I was excited for this book, but it wasnt very helpful for me.

No practical advice whatsoever as to how to help lisping! Bizarre when this is such a common problem for children.

This is a very basic book which may be of use to teachers who just want to know basic terminology. The strategies are very limited. A google search for tips would yield far more information and obviously costs nothing.
