I understand the top does not come off but how have you found to clean it?

I just wipe it off the knives are clean,and they hang in it and don’t touch anything but the top

I'm thinking of getting this to store dirty knives until I'm ready to wash them. How hard is it to clean this block?

I don't think it's a good idea. Looks very difficult if not impossible to get really clean, and it doesn't come apart.

can this be used for ceramic knives

You could put any kind of knife in it, but you should read my review before you buy. The best knife holder I have ever owned is the Kapoosh. It will hold any style or shape of knife perfectly. The new ones are bamboo and I have no experience with them, but suspect they are fine. Kapoosh is pricey, but fantastic.
