CD Review: Finally. Something to restore my faith. - As I slip deeper in to my 30's, current music seems to get more formulaic, less interesting, and altogether "done before" and done better. And then, there's Purity Ring. I'm not even comfortable assigning a genre to Purity Ring, much less a useful description of their sound. Maybe like Best Coast and Tangerine Dream sharing the same acid trip? Sure, why not? Like Pere Ubu and The Sundays were huffing ether at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2001? Yeah, that's a little closer, maybe... Like Bjork being Bjork, while Moby screws around after reading lots of Kafka? Getting warmer! Lofticries is a simply brilliant track that will probably tip you towards love or hate. In either case, check out Fineshrine after, and I defy you to tell me that it doesn't sound as appropriate blasting out of some random kid's subwoofers on an evening cruise as easily as it makes for a shoegazing anthem. I don't say this lightly: I'm concerned about what Purity Ring will follow this up with, because Shrines is *that* good. They can go ahead and break my heart like The Postal Service did a decade ago, and just not release anything after this -- and while I'll be sad, I won't lose sight of the fact that I got to hear an album this perfect. Review: If you have never listened to Purity Ring, here is where to start!!! - I cannot stress enough how much I love this album! It came just in time and was packaged very well so thank you goHastings for that! Not only is the vinyl itself in perfect condition, but it is also aesthetically pleasing. Rather than your average black vinyl, this one is a beautiful marbled baby blue that I could honestly watch spin all day. There is also a disc that I presume is for the MP3 that is also a very cute. peachy color. The art is simple, yet says so much and I could probably say the same for the music. I an honestly see this vinyl being very scratched in the future because it will be eternally on repeat. Fireshrine and Grandloves are my absolute favorites for anyone who cares and I can't wait to buy another eternity because I cannot get enough of them. This album is more of a deep, rich sound that flows through your ears like silk and it's absolutely perfect for just laying back and feeling good even 4 years later!

An outstanding debut.
What remarkable discoveries can be made by simple word of mouth! I was in a music shop a few weeks ago looking for an album by Grimes when the assistant told me that I would probably also like Purity Ring (whom I'd never heard of). If she hadn't made this recommendation, I would have missed a gleaming gem of sheer talent. Here's an example of how good "Shrines" is. I listened to the album at my desk on Monday this week and when cycling home that afternoon I simply could not stop the chorus of "Fineshrine" from playing over and over in my head. There is something about this group's lively yet clever melodies on the one hand and the engagingly girlish voice of Megan James on the other which combine to make up forty minutes of lighthearted yet profound musical joy. Why is it that once the electronic/synth scene steps away from the dance floor, it always produces something special? Just when you think that the music world is going all brainless, trashy and Gaga, there is always some indie band popping up somewhere to restore your faith. Well done, guys.

Beautifully eerie, or Eerily beautiful... either way it is great.
Ever since the debut song "Ungirthed" came out I knew the full length would be good, but I had no idea how diverse and great this album is. The instrumentals from Corin Roddick, a member of the band Born Gold, pairs nicely, almost juxaposed to Megan James' vocals, which are as macabre as they are comforting. I'll keep it simple, If you like the sounds of Crystal Castles, Flying Lotus, Grimes, The Weeknd, Joy Division, The Cure, James Blake, Fever Ray (the list can go on, but you probably get the idea) then buy this album immediately. while you are at it check out 4AD records, as they have one of, if not THE best new artsist line-ups. "Shrines" or Grime's "Visions" is the best album of 2012.

Great entry, looking forward to their sophomore.
I started catching some of Purity Ring's stuff on Youtube last year before I was familiar with the album, particularly Belispeak and Lofticries - really liked what they were doing. As I've been able to listen to this album all the way through I have to agree with some member comments that there's both push and pull. Corin has a great sense of melody and texture choices. Meghan shows a wild amount of variability in that she seems like the type of vocalist who could take any beat under the sun and make it hers. The only disappointment - it is a very monochrome sound pallet at this point. It is a freshman album however and its tough to tell whether they'd even remotely anticipated the size of reception that this album has received. Because of that I think we can say that both Corin and Meghan have a lot in reserve that we still have yet to see. Another thing in their case; I don't say this real often as a band usually has it or doesn't but, they might benefit from acquiring a few more members. I've tried my hand at producing and I know how much trying to mix/master your own stuff can drive you to tears. To try and produce by yourself especially for as thirsty a fan base that would demand full-length albums is more burden that many even very talented producers would want to labor under by themselves. Having one or two acoustic pieces, not completely going in the Submotion Orchestra direction necessarily but at least having other elements to play off of, might also help Corin's electronics open up more and have additional elements to conceptually wrap around.

Amazing album, one of the most interesting albums of the last few years in my opinion. READ THIS IF YOU PLAN TO BUY THE VINYL COPY: The product page states that it is the "initial pressing on coloured vinyl". However, this is NOT TRUE. It is, in fact, the plain black vinyl. So be aware of this before ordering to avoid disappointment when it arrives. I have contacted Amazon customer services and they said they would change the product title but this was over a week ago and they still haven't. Other than that, the vinyl copy is great and gives even more depth to the sound.
