A great Help!
Great introduction and guide to an iPad. For the newby or experienced computer user this is the way to learn your way around the iPad and utilize its many features. Sure beats trying to learn off the seat of your pants or from the limited information Apple supplies.

Best Thing Since Apple Pie
For any of those seniors out there who are not sure of what to expect from their first tablet, this is a great book.I received it prior to purchasing my iPad mini and the very first chapter saved me from making an expensive mistake. I had thought that the cheapest model would be good enough for me in this learning stage. However, under the section entitled "which generation of iPad to choose" I discovered that the cheaper model did not have a Retina Display. The Retina display enables text and images to be much sharper, and high definition videos can be played at their full quality on these models. Not only that, but the camera on the cheaper model is not as good as the one on the iPad mini with Retina Display. So that was important to me.The book has an excellent selection of chapters dealing with things such as `browsing the web,' `adding music and video,' `using apps on your iPad,' and a very important chapter on `finding your way with Maps.' Apple has replaced Google Maps with its own Apple Maps or you can download the Google Maps App if you prefer. But Apple Maps works with Siri and has a great 3D view section called FlyOver that works as well.At the end of each chapter is a Summary and a section called Brain Training, which helps to reaffirm all the information in that chapter. As you go through the book, you keep adding to the knowledge and the skills you've already acquired. As far as I'm concerned, this little manual is the best thing since apple pie.

Instructions were good but...
I have to set my aside my bias regarding the iPad because I'm not a fan but I have to work on them due to support issues at work. The comics that are at the beginning of each section didn't help me in that regard because (1) I prefer the 'clunky' desktops and laptops and (2) made the book seem like a sales job for iPad rather than a learning tool. The above said, the instructions in the book are nicely done. A bit wordy but pictures are clear and while wordy, it stays on topic. This is definitely meant for those who are 'new' to mobile computing because for someone who is more familiar with technology, that person is more likely to have a 'clunky desktop' or laptop as well as a tablet or iPad and is more likely to try and find the info via web rather than getting a book. But still, for a beginning run, this is a nice book as a starter. A bit too much sales job to me, but otherwise, a good starter book.

Perfect for the Complete Novice.
.Explaining the iPad to a complete novice -- someone who has little experience with email, Web browsers, or iTunes -- is a tricky and vital task. So many seniors are befuddled by the online world, and yet they need it more than anybody. iPad opens the door, and this book opens the door to iPad.McManus does it quite well. He introduces topics in the right order, explains them as if you're "from Mars" and then goes into reasonable depth for each topic. See excerpts below, or use amazon's "Look Inside" feature.Nice index -- about 900 entries.Written to a British audience, but it's good for anyone.- - - Excerpts - - -"If you haven't used email before, you're in for a treat! The iPad makes it easy to keep in touch with friends and family by sending them messages they can read on their computers, their smartphones, or their own iPads." -page 95"To get started with email, you'll need an 'email account'. Similar to the way that a bank account stores your money, an email account stores your email messages." -page 96"If you find a website you want to remember, you can bookmark it. Bookmarking stores a link to the website in your browser so you an easily find it again." -page 154"Podcasts can use video or be audio-only. A good place to start finding podcasts is to look for your favourite BBC radio shows, such as...." -page 194- - - Alternatives - - -There are several "iPad for Seniors" books which I have not read...probably worth a look. - - - More Info - - -Reviews for the 3rd Edition and 1st Edition apply equally to this 4th Edition. It's just been updated with info on new models and iOS features.~~~ Comments & questions welcome ~~~

IPAD for the OLDER and WISER: GET UP AND RUNNING WITH YOUR APPLE iPad
Got an iPad?? Didn't get a manual with it either did you? You gotta get this book!! I thought I knew how to set up and use my iPad. Boy was I wrong. I only knew about a tenth of what this gadget will do. Greater communication and greater use of apps leads to a happier iPad user. I found the instructions to be understandable by a non techie and I liked the little tests at the end of each chapter that tested what I had really learned in the chapter...just call me elementary but it felt good to know I did understand what I had read. There is no need to have such a smart gadget as an iPad if you do not know how to use it...so get with it and order this book from Amazon and have yourself some lessons you understand and forget talking to those geeky techie nerds who leave you feeling dumber than dirt.

Just the job
Like all guides in this series (U3A) one is not deluged with too much information in any one go. I don't know whether the book would be of use to study prior to getting an iPad. I found that, having set up my iPad with the assistance of one who was conversant with the procedure and getting to grips with the basics, the book proved invaluable as a reference manual. At least you can then make up your mind re how to proceed. Information is given in logical steps together with staging posts where one can ensure that information covered in that section has been absorbed. There is a minimum of techno speak. Yes, I would recommend this book.

New Edition
I previously purchased the 3rd edition of this book which does not cover the current model iPad Air, I did not appreciate this at the time of purchase. The book did however give me the basics of iPad ownership and use and in this respect it proved to be very helpful. I have just ordered the 4th Edition which does cover the iPad Air so hopefully i will be able to get a fuller appreciation of the iPad which we own.If anyone would like my copy of Edition 3, I would be pleased to pass it on for just the cost of postage.

Being a complete idiot where technology is concerned I found this book most helpful. It progresses slowly and anticipates my queries. Just occasionally I cannot find on my iPad what it is referring to so a few more explicit diagrams would be good. Love the way it is divided up into small sections and the tips are great.

Useful reference book
I rate this publication as three stars - it is one of three similar publications we purchased to fathom the mysteries of a new iPad Mini. Experience has shown, in Windows at any rate, that no one book answers all the questions. Even with the facility of web page searches for help, the 'hard copy' word is worthwhile. Thus this is a useful backup. It will doubtless end up as a shelf filler but in the meantime it lies within arms reach! It is a larger, comfortable format and pleasant to use.
