Did any of you order the installation offered by amazon? how does that work? do they send you a voucher? or do you arrange through amazon?

Save your money and skip the installation offer.  Nest made installation nearly idiot proof.  Read their requirement and check that your thermostat meet the requirement.  All that entail is you remove your old thermostat, if you don't see a twisted pair or anything that mentioned 110/220 V on the old thermostat, you can use Nest.  They provide a YouTube link that you can follow while installing Nest.  I got mine done in about 30 min from start to finish, and I'm not a savvy electrician type.

What does the 3rd gen do that the 2nd gen won't?

3rd Gen NEST has a lot more than just size of the screen, it uses 2.4ghz and also 5ghz for better wifi connectivity, also a feature called FARSIGHT which allows you to see the screen as soon as you enter your home, to show you the temp status. I used to work for their technical support dept. it is an amazing NLT (NEST Learning Thermostat). Worth every penny!!

I have a thermostat upstairs and downstairs that work independently, will i need to purchase two of these to be able to accomodate both floors

I have 2nd Gen Nest upstairs and a non-Nest downstairs.  Been running this setup for the last year. I am buying a 3rd generation Nest + $50 Amazon Gift Card and a Nest Protect since one of my eight smoke alarms just died.  Rather than replace one smoke alarm with the old technology, I'm adding a Nest Protect. Nest just makes things easier for me being on the road 10-14 days a month.  No more guests leaving my thermostat on 64 in the middle of summer when they use my house as a vacation home.  That's what's drove me to Nest in the first place.  The ability to set a lock code on the Nest so I stop getting the $600 electric bill.  Nest protects of my generosity when clueless friends/guests don't.

Does the nest make any clicking sounds when it calls for heat or a/c like traditional thermostats?

No clicking when the t-stats turns on the heat or A/C like the old legacy t-stats you’re used to. Only clicks when you rotate the dial.
