Then it would be removed from the basket. You could if you like place the lid on top, or not. So if you want a basket that has no lid ever, you could remove it and never use it again. The way that it is made now, the lid just hangs off on the back side and you could just let it hang and never use the lid. And if at any time you want to begin using the lid for the basket, it is simply hanging off the back side. This could work either way. Looks nice on my landing and matches well with my new grey carpet. Easyish to assemble, i found the poles were quite tricky to stay in at the top. Seems to stay in now fully assembled,so all good. The inner bag is good idea although I won't use it and sometimes the washing slips down between bag and basket. Generally pleased.
