Shepherd Hardware 9071 7/8-Inch Plastic Furniture Socket

This product worked as advertised. At first I ordered the next size up which I considered modifying (I couldn't return because I had opened package before I realized my mistake). In the end I decided it would just be easier to order the correct size. They snapped right in using a little friendly persuasion with a rubber mallet. I was able to snap the casters in and everything works fine. Nice snug fit, they should outlast me. Oh, by the way I used them in an old iron bed.

Right item wrong size. Not size I needed. Size needed was not one I could get. Actually found it at local hardware.

Instead of throwing out an older tubular chair, we purchased these inserts and bought some casters and made an unusable chair into one of value. These inserts are easy to slide in the tubular legs and look as if they will last for quite a while. They are a reasonable alternative to spending additional dollars to purchase new equipment.

I just hate them things. They are just way to small for what I needed them for, I couls not use them for my bed so I let my dog play with it.

In my search for replacement caster sockets I learned that the socket specs are presented in different ways - sometimes as tube OD and gauge and sometimes tube ID. The Shepherd specs are referenced to tubing ID (the 7/8 product #9071 would fit snugly inside 7/8in ID tube). My tubing was 1 inch OD 16ga (0.54in) leaving a tubing ID of about 0.982in, so the 7/8 product was loose in the tube. I also tried the 1in and it was too large for my tube without trimming each fin. I ended up using Oagen's 1in S-R100A sockets to fit my 1in OD tube. I measured both the Shepherd #9071 and #9073 sockets and the with my calipers - dimensions shown in attached photos.

These work very well. Bought as a replacement for broken inserts and they popped right in. Still holding on the guest single bed.

The learning curve on these were a little more than I expected. Just fyi attach the castors to the inserts before inserting them into whatever cart or furniture you're inserting them. I almost damaged my bench doing it the other way around. I couldn't get the right leverage to get the castors to click into the insert. BUT once I put the castors on the inserts what was taking me hours took a couple of minutes and it went in so smooth. My bench was rolling in less than 10 minutes.
