This gel is a game changer for curly hair, especially in heat and humidity. I have difficult hair. Texture runs from fine to coarse (finer hair on crown and canopy, coarse hair on the lower sections). I also have a LOT of hair. Curl pattern ranges from almost straight to s-waves to medium corkscrew/ringlet curls. For porosity, most of my hair is low porosity, although the coarser bottom layer has some medium-porosity strands. Given that my hair has such great variation, it’s really hard to find products that work for my entire mane. This gel works GREAT for my hair! My best approach for styling has been leave-in conditioner plus lightweight curl cream plus gel that dries to a cast, which I then scrunch out once dry. This gel is wonderful for that. I still experience small amounts of halo frizz (practically unavoidable with my hair. Since the topmost layer is finer, the strands that grow straighter on top refuse to join curl families. If I attempt to finger-curl those baby flyaways they might stay together, but will be practically straight). But overall, gel hold is really good and works over at least two days (I’m on day 3 today- still have some nice bouncy curls despite minimal refresh). This gel doesn’t leave my hair feeling dry or limp, so it works in my routine to maintain my ideal protein/moisture balance levels. Also, I’m highly sensitive to fragrance, especially floral scents. I was concerned when I opened my trial-size bottle to break the seal. It was a mild scent, but definitely floral. I needn’t have been worried though. The fragrance isn’t heavy, and completely disappeared once my hair was dry and I scrunched out the gel cast. On days I’m looking for springier curls, this is quickly going into regular rotation. My other almost-holy-grail product (verb foaming gel) works best for softer/tamer curls For background: despite trying multiple approaches and various levels of fidelity to the curly-girl method, I’ve found my best bet is to find products that work for my hair, no matter whether they include forbidden ingredients. Despite having self-admitted difficult hair, it’s extremely tolerant to sulfates and water-soluble silicones. The strict curly girl method was a complete fail for my hair over the 1-2 years+ I attempted it. I’ve spent the past few years trying various products to see what works for me.

The gel is definitely great at taming frizz. It does make my hair soft, alongside the leave-in spray and styling cream. It definitely has good hold since my hair lasts the whole day.

Absolutely perfect for thick, curly hair. I need a heavy product to weight my frizzy, hair down into soft waves and this is the best I've found since the L'Oreal Melting Gel was discontinued- so sad. Mu hair is just about shoulder length, but I have used it on long hair. This styling product does not become sticky or stiff. That's what I love about it. The first day, once it dries, it has a very strong hold, but it's very shiny and nice looking. If you let it air dry, then just gently press on your curls, the strong hold softens just right to hold your hairdo in soft curls and I've found that it continues the next day looking great. It is not stiff to the touch. It does not add thickness which I like. The scent is fine. It's quite expensive, so that's why I only gave it four stars.

My wife is writing this review- I have tried alot of gels for curly hair and this has been the best my far. The product is good quality ,and has lasted since June last year. Great for maintaining flyaways and dosent give that typical "sticky,tacky " feeling compared to other brands like Not Your Mother's .

I am leaving a review as evidence that it does work on super thick coily type 4 hair just so that other Black folks know to buy it. I know how difficult it is to find these product reviews! It’s really hard to find coily hair reviews of this product line. I guarantee you that my hair is more challenging than yours to style. I think my hair is type 4b-c (defined tiny coils the size of a pencil)and this product stops my long hair (twist out) from scrunching into a totally frizzy undefined mess in hot humid weather. It’s the strongest hold that I’ve ever tried. I wish that I could move to a less humid area, but I can’t lol. I’m about to try the stronger hold version now. The photos included are as follows: styled without the product and long, no products at all and short, styled with the product and long. I can venture outside with a twist out that is not in a bun and have my hair survive.

This product regularly gets rave reviews, and I don't doubt it works for people with a certain kind of hair. But for people like me with wavy, fine, low porosity hair? It's failed me just like every other gel that claims to "lock out humidity". I live in Michigan where it generally feels like a sauna for at least two to three months out of the year. Now this gel works wonders on my hair under normal conditions. Leaves it defined with a soft hold... But when I step outside on July on a day with 98% humidity? Frizz city. So if you're lucky enough to have more robust strands, this might work wonders for you. Though I dare say there are cheaper brands that would work just as well for you. But for anyone with baby fine hair like mine? Don't expect this to work any better than all the other gels that have come before it.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: Best product out there for curls in this heat! Curls: This defines my curls and keeps them HYDRATED and Shiny for DAYS during the hot summer! 5 day hair never looked this good! This is the ONLY product I have tried the last 8 years since I've worn my hair curly, that I don't worry about my hair in the humidity and heat. After days in the heat this week, 95+ degrees, on the beach with the wind, my curls usually would become HUGE and full of frizz bc of the Humidity! This product, I am on day 5! Still have defined curls! Usually I get 2-3 days at best! This feels like a mix between a Gel and a Serum, has a GREAT SLIP, a little goes a long way, and my thick curls hold definition for days and feel super hydrated.

Creates amazing curls with little to no frizz when used with a curl brush/comb. Hair isn’t crunchy and feels silky. A must have for curly hair folk.

Mein Lockenfriseur hat mir dieses Gel empfohlen... Ich wechsle ab zwischen dem Mielle Curling Custard (Winter) und diesem Ouidad Gel (Sommer). Dieses Gel ist viel leichter als das von Mielle, macht keinen harten Cast sondern weiche definierte Locken und gibt trotzdem guten Halt. Ich habe 3a/3b Locken und extrem viel Frizz. Vor allem im Sommer bei der hohen Luftfeuchtigkeit kämpfe ich immer damit, dass die Frisur hält. Oft habe ich schon nach ein par Stunden einen riesigen Busch auf dem Kopf als hätte ich in die Steckdose gefasst. Das ist das einzige Gel, bei welchem meine Frisur auch bei hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit oder bei Regen tagelang hält! Klare Kaufempfehlung!:-)

Lo he probado hoy y me encanta como me ha dejado el cabello. Me re activa los rizos, me lo deja suave, brilloso y sin apelmazar. Con tan solo te pongas un poco nada más en la mano, te lo deja súper bonito. Es caro y no trae mucho la verdad, el bote es algo pequeño pero vale la pena cada euro que me he gastado en este producto. Además de que me lo deja efecto mojado que es mi look preferido. Realmente lo volveré a comprar y además de que probaré otros productos de esta marca. Estoy muy muy satisfecho. Hacia mucho tiempo que buscaba un producto que me dejara el efecto mojado, sin apelmazar y nada de volumen ya que odio el volumen porque tengo mucho frizz y poroso y este producto me lo deja de maravilla!!! P.S. lo he probado un día con muchísima humedad y me lo ha dejado estupendo. Es importante aclarar esto porque los productos que son anti frizz y anti humedad deben ponerse a prueba un día de mucha humedad para saber si el producto realmente sirve.
