As Good As They Get
I will preface this review with this caveat: Auto coolers are not refrigerators. They will keep cold things cold, with help. My husband drives a truck for 12-16 hours per day. He never stops, so I pack his lunch every day. He carries water, energy drinks, veggies, sandwiches, sometimes pizza, etc. He used a Rubbermaid cooler for a long time, but it was too small. He needed a larger cooler that would fit between the seats of the truck and have more space. This cooler is HUGE. They make two smaller ones, but since I like to load it up with big ice packs, it's a good size. It'll never actually be full unless we take a trip with it, though. 2 liter bottles stand up in it and I'm guessing that six of them would fit. I load it up with 2 1.5 liter water bottles, a couple of 16 oz lowcarb Monster drinks, plus a sandwich, cherry tomatoes fruit and other snacks and the cooler is still about half full even with the two large blue ice bags. The Koolatron does the job nicely. It will not cool warm things down well and if left on its own, cold things will start to warm up after 8-10 hours, so I put 2 large blue ice bags in the cooler every morning and they come back at night still partially frozen. Any leftover drinks are still cold. I also purchased the power inverter so that I could plug in the cooler first thing when I get up. I then load the cooler and the ice bags right before he leaves. That helps considerably. Is the cooler keeping things at 40*? Doubtful, but it's keeping them cold enough that drinks are refreshing and his food does't spoil. He keeps the AC on in the truck all the time, so the cooler doesn't have to work too hard. A soft sided cooler like this isn't as effective as a hardsided cooler, so there's a bit of a tradeoff, but it's the largest one I could find that would fit where it needed to go (between the seats of a Peterbilt Daycab after removing the drink holders) and it's lightweight. The shoulder strap makes it easy to carry. By the time I load it down with a couple liters of water, drinks, ice and use the bungee on top for his paperwork, it weighs about 30 pounds or so. A hard cooler would be impossible. The outside pockets are handy, you can even put ice in the drink holder (which will only hold a cup the diameter of a soda can). There's a mesh pocket in the back that's also very handy. Overall, we're very pleased with this cooler, but unlike the another reviewer, our expectations were more realistic.

Noisy and sucks car battery power.
I purchased this product to prepare for an extended road trip through the Northwestern US. I purchased the product well in advance of the trip to familiarize myself with the product. That was good since, while the product information appeared to say that it came with an adaptor for 120 watt power, when I received it I realized that I had to purchase that separately. Once on the road I was surprised to find out how loud it was. Also, having read the directions for the Koolatron and my vehicles instructions for 12 volt operation I began to get vehicle notices that I had a low battery situation. As time wore on I had to stop using it plugged into the vehicles 12 volt power outlet. The balance of the trip we cooled our stuff in hotel refrigerators ( running it in a hotel room overnite required some serious earbuds). and repacked the Koolatron each morning. It did a reasonable job of keeping contents cool for a daylong ride but that's a pretty expensive cooler solution. Upon returning from a monthlong trip I found that I had exceeded the time to return the product to Amazon. Sad!

Travel & Emergencies. Paid for itself after 10 years of reliable service. Love it!
UPDATE: It's still going after 10 years of heavy use. Indispensable for family travel and blackouts. Still highly recommend. I'm so shocked to see such negative reviews of this product. After six years of heavy use across countless miles, and throughout numerous power outages, our Koolatron is still going strong. We love it so much that I'm considering a larger model for camping. But, I'm not sure if we'll need more than this. The capacity on this 26-Quart model is sufficient to carry all the essentials for our family of six, and our food stays fresh for days. I can barely function without milk for my coffee, and our little ones go through it like crazy. But, even after loading in a full gallon jug, I'm still amazed at how much more this relatively compact model can accommodate. In addition to the requisite milk supply, we usually load it up with fruit, veggies, cheese, yogurt, and condiments, and still have room for extra drinks. To assure that we get the most out of it, we add our cold food straight from the fridge to the cooler on the AC adapter. Once we're ready to go, we move it to the car on its native DC connection, then reconnect it at our destination with the adapter again. While it is not a refrigerator, it is sufficiently powerful to keep food fresh this way for several days. In fact, I can't remember ever needing to throw out spoiled food due to a lack of cooling power. We haven't tested it in extreme heat, but we've been more than pleased with its performance at home during power outages, and in hotels where the temperatures are rarely above 73°. In these instances, 40° below 73° should be about 33°. I don't think it ever gets quite that cold, but it does chill and preserve the food well enough to produce condensation on the containers, and to keep us eating fresh for days on end. We love that this system allows us to eat well and save money on family trips, rather than going broke and making ourselves ill eating 'road food'. It also enables us to conveniently satisfy the whimsical and erratic appetites of our four little ones with healthy food fast and on the cheap. In this way, we feel this cooler has paid for itself many times over. The pockets are a big help too. This is where we pack items such as salt, pepper, sugar, utensils, small cutting boards, napkins, and more. This model is constructed with a strong rigid shell inside (so it doesn't collapse much for storage), but the soft sides yield a little in tight spaces, and make it more comfortable to carry. The shoulder strap is another great feature too, since it frees up our hands to haul other luggage and gear. Even the fabric itself has proven to be very durable, despite years of rough handling. In addition to traveling well (including a drive from Oklahoma to New York with our 1- and 3-year-old daughters in a Jeep Wrangler!), it kept us afloat while we were without power for nine days after Hurricane Sandy. We charged our Stanley J5C09 1000 Peak Amp Jump Starter off of our car, then ran the Koolatron off of it for about 6-8 hours on, and about 2-3 hours off with great success. Despite the lack of power and refrigeration, we had all of our basics and, between the cooler and our gas range, we still ate well nonetheless. It would have been a major hassle to keep ice stocked daily, when all we needed was a tank of gas and a battery pack to make this little powerhouse hum. After so many years of reliable service, we are extremely satisfied with our purchase. This cooler has been a great investment for our family, and I strongly recommend it for travel and emergencies.

Would give it 5 stars, but
The Koolatron D25 is as advertised, keeps things cool,( remember you do have to cool things down before them putting into the cooler ), easy to carry (light), relatively quiet when operating, and does keep things cool for short periods of time even without the 12volt fan running. Two negatives - The bottle / can holder on the side the cooler, both plastic liners tore out the first time I put a can of soda in them. No problem though. the liners prevented anything bigger than a soda can to fit, like a standard water bottle. Actually I like it better this way. Secondly, I bought the D25 to use instead of the smaller version the D13 that I had as a "backup" cooler for our boat. The D13 worked great, but is on the small size. I originally wanted to replace the D13 with one of the "hard side" coolers and had a specific place for it on our boat so I needed accurate measurements to see if those models would fit, (some of the "hard side" models look tapered at the bottom ), I sent about three emails to Koolatron and never heard back from them. That's why they did not get a 5 star rating from me.

Better warmer than a cooler
I bought the Koolatron to keep food warm before a game. This year we went to spring training in Phoenix. Each morning I would cook lunch for that day and pack it in the Koolatraon. We then went out on morning excursions in the area. We would eat the food afterwards when we reached the ball park for the day. Most days the food was kept in the Koolatron from 7 Am to Noon. The warmer was used between 3 and 4 hours with the car engine off and we never had a problem with the battery (and the battery is 5 or more years old). I checked, and the food was 145 degrees F when removed from the pack. Koolatron does not advice this as a food safety device, but this is better than room temperature for several hours and it tastes better hot. The inside bottom liner does get HOT when in warmer mode so be careful. I will be purchasing the smaller versions of this warmer for personal trips as this one is large enough for a family. The cooler options is OK but not as great as the warmer. As others have stated it does not work as well as adverticed but works much better than just a plain cooler. I would suggest using ice in the Koolatron - but make sure it is sealed. Try a frozen capped water bottle or double zipped baggies. Koolatron makes two different versions of this product - the difference being the external pocketing. So make sure when you are purchasing one that it has the pocket configuration that would work better for you.

Beware The 12 Volt Plug
Cooler, five stars Plug on power cord, zero stars. EDIT: I also contacted Koolatron about the plug issue by email, and I had a reply the same day thanking me for the feedback and saying that they had addressed this issue with their supplier. Altogether, a very good interaction. We ordered this cooler for a road trip. It's a good thing that the actual trip is a few weeks off yet. In order to discover any possible problems before we left, I decided to burn this piece of equipment in prior to leaving. It had been run for a total of about seven hours when this issue reared it's head. Poor contact between the fuse in the plug and the spring generated enough heat (and the plug did not feel hot, just barely warm!) that it took whatever temper that the spring had away, and it collapsed. I'm not returning this; I ordered a replacement plug rated for 15 amps from an electronics supplier to replace this one. I'm not letting this thing win. In testing, so far the cooler is fine. I'll do more burn in (Hello, Stateside Burn In and Quality Control, how may I help you?) after I've replaced the low rent connector, and I will update this review then.

Almost just as cold as my fridge!
***Editing - I added a few small gel ice packs near the fan and it lowered the temp of the cooler even more! Just when I thought this cooler couldn’t get any better, it did! I bought this cooler for traveling with breastmilk and needed to make sure it would be able to maintain a uniform temp in the car, on a plane, etc. I plugged the cooler in the moment I unpacked it and let it cool empty for a few hours before using one of my temp alarms to monitor the temp and I was pleasantly surprised! I thought it would maybe get Ja lightly cooler than the ambient temperature around it, but it’s much cooler than that! I am going to let it run for 24 hours to see how it does and experiment around with adding some ice packs to it to see if it can maintain a cooler temp with some assistance from gel packs. Otherwise I think this cooler is a great item and I am almost tempted to buy a second just in case anything happens to it! I’m excited to get out and use it on my upcoming trips and will be able to breathe easy knowing my precious cargo will be cooled at a consistent temperature! So glad I was able to snatch this up on sale, but even at full price I would say it’s worth it! It’s like having one of those small can coolers that plug in with the added functionality to be able to fold it up flat for storage!

Not really worth it - heed the warnings of other reviewers
We got this cooler due to its larger size, soft-sidedness, and cooling capability. We have two young kids and we do several family road trips, so we thought it would be a good fit for long journeys, especially keeping juice, milk, string cheese, etc. cool enough throughout the day. While technically the cooler worked, it could have been a lot better, and it really isn't worth the hassles or price for what it delivers. Having read other reviews, here's what I agree with: - There's a difference between refrigeration and "cooling" - The cooler is quite large - Using this cooler did indeed keep items a bit colder than if we hadn't used the cooling function However, these agreements don't cover the negatives. - While the item fits on the floor in front of the rear seat in our SUV, the fan is awfully noisy, and pushes out a bit of heat. - The durability and construction is questionable, as a few of the zipper pulls broke on its maiden voyage. We ended up using bent paper clips for the rest of the trip. - the side pockets don't offer enough elasticity to allow much more than paper, cards, or possibly a rigid string cheese stick - when testing prior to departure, the cooler struggled to keep the internal temperature below 66 degrees, even though items came from the fridge, and the house thermostat was set at 76. After two days, the warm exhaust and droning noise in-vehicle were too much, so we unplugged it and used it as a soft-sided conventional cooler for the remainder of our trips. The cooling unit took up interior space, and the odd exterior pockets weren't useful, and the aforementioned zipper issue made using it less satisfactory than if we had picked up a different cooler for half the price (not even including the adapter). Bottom line: we're hoping to get $15 at our next garage sale for it (including adapter). A bit of a waste.

Packs away and works very well
Surprisingly good. I avoided buying this for sometime as I wasn’t sure if it would work. But it’s excellent to keep in the back of my car when things need to be kept cool. Packs away and is there when I need it.
