As far as I've tested, no. Unless you have a combo jack then it should work without it, but if you have a dedicated headphone and microphone jack then you need the y-splitter in order to use both the headphones, and the microphone.

does it work with a ps3

This will not work with the Playstation 3 since the console doesn't have a 3.5mm socket. The USB on the headset is for the LED lighting only.
