Horses are among the most complex creatures in the animal kingdom: so much can go wrong so quickly. And when it does, these delicate, injury prone beasts need swift treatment. Otherwise, a simple eating disorder might rapidly lead to death and a minor hoof injury to permanent lameness. To make things even more difficult, equine veterinary care is costly and insurance prohibitively expensive. That&;s why any horse owner, as well as equine veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine, must have this ultimate resource on hand. The Comprehensive Guide to Equine Veterinary Medicine is a thorough, carefully designed medical reference featuring four-color anatomical drawings by the most acclaimed veterinary illustrator Kip Carter. It covers all areas of equine health, including diagnosis and treatment, and delves into basic equine behavior and safety, preventive health care, and first aid. Twelve in-depth chapters outline the individual body systems, anatomy and physiology, and abnormalities. A Health Care section includes alternative therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy, along with options for rehabilitation and physical therapy. Critical information appears in tables, charts, side bars, and bulleted lists for quick access. In addition, there&;s an informative history of veterinary procedures, followed by three valuable appendices with terminology, common medications, and advice for the first-time horse owner. A selection of the Equestrian Book Club. Review: Beautiful book - Just started it, but so far it looks like a great resource for both the lay and professional communities. Vet techs or veterinarians may want more detail in some areas, but so far it looks like a great foundation, with excellent pictures, diagrams, etc. Review: Recommended for anyone! - This is a great book that exceeded my overall expectations. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know a little extra about our equine friends or if you are even in any collage classes, right now I am studying for large veterinary medicine and found this book very very useful.

Great book, perfect for new horse owners
Great book! Love the medicine charts in the back. Any new horse owner should have this book around. It is a great tool to even help you understand your vet and the situations.

Great book
I used this as a text for a horse health class that I taught at the local Jr. college. Great content, fantastic illustrations and very readable. There were 2 notable mistakes (pg. 40: shock causes tachycardia not bradycardia and pg. 164: no antemortum diagnosis for rabies). Hopefully a second edition will be printed with updated info. (Hyperelastis cutis = HERDA, etc.). Meanwhile I highly recommend this book.

Five star reference book for horse health
This book is an absolute must-have for all horsepeople and horse establishments. I find the content, diagrams, and layout in this book better and more up to date than some of the sections in the other popular manual 'Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners'. You can't go wrong buying this book and will undoubtedly find it to be a very valuable item in your equine library. I am impressed.
