You can get rice by the giant sized 20 lb. bag so it's a lot cheaper than repurchasing a whole new Bed Buddy. i wouldn't recommend washing the thing with the filling inside, especially if you've replaced it with rice like i have. A lot of folks do like me & slip it inside an athletic sock to kept it clean longer during use - then wash the sock. The tube is a close-weave heavy duty material that will lasts a long time, but it does tend to leak after 3 or 4 years due to the microwave energy eventually breaking down the fabric. Open one end (or you can just cut the end off), dump out the stuff (you can also do this if you've accidentally roasted it - the stuff will "overcook" & char & stink if you leave it in too long), fill with rice & resew it closed just tight enough to hold it so you can undo the stitching (folding the end helps). **Q: Is it washable** A: Nope. You can't ever immerse it in water. It's full of rice, so suddenly instead of a heating pad you have a soggy sack of Risotto. **Q: How come it doesn't really get cold.... Just cool. I put it in the freezer for 3 hours. How long does it need to be in the freezer?** A: So... I have 6 of these... 2 are "Cold Packs" and 4 are "Hot Packs"... For the Hot Packs I just take them as-is and nuke two-at-a-time for 1:35mins on high in a 1100watt microwave oven. Solid warmth for a good 60-75mins. I even have a hand-made bungee cord web for holding them across my back and shoulders... Love it! The Cold Packs took me some time to figure out... First, a single pack can be either "cold" or "hot", but once you decide to make it "really" cold, then don't use it as a Hot Pack after that (see below...). As-is, these packs left in a freezer for 48hrs+ will get cold... but the filling in the packs is basically dried beans, very low moisture. Enough moisture that microwaves can vibrate it plenty-hot, but not enough to really create a dense ice mass when frozen. So... I took 3 of my packs and soaked them in warm water for about and hour. Then, I set them out to dry until the fabric and cords had dried out. At this point, just based on crude measurements, the pack has gained about 10% mass in absorbed water content. Toss that in the freezer for 3-4hrs and the result is a very cold wrap that has the density and chill of a very long and skinny bag of frozen peas. Danger, Notice, Alert, Fuego!!! Once you've "iced up" a pack like this, DO NOT try to use it as a Hot Pack!!! I gave one of these a 45sec heat cycle and it came out like a sock full of molten lava... The added moisture that makes it very freezable also makes it very volatile when heated. It finally developed a few holes and of course the packing material began leaking out. I found this new design and I hesitated to buy it based on the poor ratings by some of the reviewers. Finally I purchased it and I am glad I did. This newer design is different but still good. I am a big man and I use the bed buddy on my neck, shoulders and biceps. This new one still fits around my neck. It does have two channels filled with the same type of filler as the original bed buddy and it works just as well. In our medium strength microwave we have to heat this new one at 2 minutes and 30 seconds to 3 minutes which is identical to the original one we had. The new one stays warm for almost as long as the original and the only difference is that perhaps the original had more filler in it. The original came with a cotton tube that the bed buddy fits into to help keep it cleaner. Fortunately when I threw away the old bed buddy last week I saved the tube and it fits the new bed buddy perfectly. I do wish the new one came with the tube as it keeps the bed buddy cleaner and it also helps to protect you from possible burns if the bed buddy is to hot or has hot spots from your microwave. If the original bed buddy was a 5 star product, and in my opinion it was, then this one is at least a 4 star. It works the same, heats as well and smells like fresh baked bread just like to original. It also fits my big neck to help relieve sore muscles after working out with weights. I can't tell the difference in the length between the original and this one but the new one is slightly shorter, a couple of inches at most. This new one is still flexible and wraps easily around your body. The new dual tube design helps keep the filling material more evenly distributed along the length of the entire bed buddy which is a benefit. The older design tended to get spots where there was no filler in certain areas, like the middle, based upon how it wrapped around my neck. The only real negative for me is the lack of the original bed buddy tube for the outside. I like this product and I gave it a 4 star. I am happy that I purchased it and I will buy another one. It is the best product I have found for my stiff arthritic neck and I recommend it for that problem. It is ideal for stiff muscles or just warming up and loosening up your body. Just a couple of warnings. I see that people want to wash the bed buddy. Don't do it. Take a large tube sock and put the bed buddy in it and heat it that way. It stays cleaner, as the bed buddy doesn't touch your skin, and you can remove the sock and wash the sock to get it clean and put it back onto the bed buddy. I see where people want to wet the bed buddy and heat it for moist heat. ABSOLUTELY NOT! It takes 9 times the energy to make steam as it does to boil water. You risk severe burns if you wet the bed buddy and then heat it. In addition you will damage the product by damaging the filler material. I liked this product so much that I have now purchased 2 more. I gave one to my 90 year old mother in law and 87 year old father in law and I gave one to my son for his back! Every time I go over to see my in laws, one of them is using the bed buddy.
