Grand space adventure by the coauthor of Sassinak and Generation Warriors. Heris, a female officer forced to resign her commission, winds up as captain of an interstellar luxury yacht. Being a rich old lady's hyperlight chauffer seems boring, until Heris finds herself fighting for her life against smugglers. Review: ... a big fan of Space Operas-This Book was a good read with a strong female lead character - I'm a big fan of Space Operas-This Book was a good read with a strong female lead character, reminiscent of books by CJ Cherryh & other female authors. This story held my attention throughout & I recommend it. I have read a number of other books by Elizabeth Moon in the VATTA series, which I found to be well thought out & quite entertaining. I look forward to reading the remaining books in the Serrano series. Review: Not Space Opera but it is Enjoyable - This was my first book by Elizabeth Moon. As a fan of sweeping space opera and a person running short on the authors with which I am more familiar, I turned to this book looking for more. I did not find it but I was not disappointed. It does involve spaceships, nobility, military dynasties, scoundrels and the other stock items of space opera but they are not put together in operatic form. It made for a pleasant change. The heroine of the story is one Heris Serrano, late of the space navy. She comes from a long line of naval officers and a naval career is what she desired for her life. It went well for a while but then tragedy struck. Because of the actions of a venal admiral, she found herself disobeying orders. As a result, she faces a choice. She can resign for the good of the service and say nothing or she can stand trial with her entire crew. She chooses to protect her crew and winds up the captain of a rich lady's yacht. It is not a happy decision. She finds herself with a splendid yacht, and inept and corrupt crew, an employer who knows nothing about yachts and cares mostly for fox hunting and several bratty and aristocratic young people. She is taking them to a fox hunt on another planet. All is not as it seems, however. The kids find themselves being hunted and the yacht's owner turns out to have unexpected depths. A good measure of vengeance helps out as well. The story is well written and, if not the most exciting I have encountered, certainly well worth the effort of reading it. I look forward to reading more.

Book 1 of 8 for the Captain Heris Sarrano collection of space adventures
Open yourself up to a new space opera in this first book of an eight book series of several strong female charcteries. The series of books is the adventures of an extensive creation of different worlds. Elizabeth Moon was a Marine officer in the late 60's and she has a strong grasp of war and politics in her created universe. Well worth the read. Then go check out her VATTA hero space books also with a strong female cast.

Not what I expected
I did not expect the plot of this book. I assumed (I know) it would gravitate to some form of military scifi. I realize that the fox hunt scenario was necessary to get everyone to the appointed planet but did it really require all those pages of riding lessons and hunting? I think it was way over done. The four spoiled brats that get thrown into the man hunting mix through their own selfish act is nice. They survive and learn, well three do anyway. The end of this book sets up the next in the trilogy when the heir to the throne is one of the hunters. Of course he is shielded by all, even though he made a human kill, but it is discovered that he is a moron. This will have repercussions in the next book. A decent read but nothing special.

Great story and characters - but for the love story!
Such a great story, I loved it from the start. How could I have missed this author for so many years? I love military sf, and that part of the story was so very good, the plot interesting and cool. The characters and the interaction between them was excellent. So what killed this book for me, why do I hesitate about reading the next one? The love story in it. It was so sweet and uncomplicated and the love-interest so nauseatingly "perfect". Unlike the rest of the book, that tiny part is so full of clichรฉs it drags the rest of the book down. I know the novel is well known and has sold thousands if not millions for years, but still: Please Ms Moon, please rewrite the love story? The rest is so great!

great read!
I am not much into true science fiction at all. Usually it's just too technical and sterile for my taste. The Serrano books changed my mind. Here is a space opera in the best sense of the word with believable and likable characters, a gripping plot and even a teensy bit of romance to boot. HUNTING PARTY contains a strange but delightful mix of old fashioned science fiction techno stuff, low tech survival adventure, evolving characters, intrigue and, believe it or not, fox hunting. Read it if you enjoy characters you can relate to.

Good book
I read a review of this book and decided to give it a try. I liked it and bought the rest of the serie. But the book is not really a sci-fi book: the main plot is on a planet and I think the location is marginal in the story. There are by far more horses than starship.
