Q: Would this card be suitable for painting and/or drawing on? Or does it have a shiny finish?

Does NOT have a shiny finish, no noticeable bleed when printing B/W or color using a Deskjet printer. Don't know how it would react to paint. My best description would be to call it "11x17 white card stock".

Q: Is there any translucency to this paper despite its weight?

No, there isn't. It's a great paper for lots of projects. However, if you're looking for a paper for greeting cards, I wouldn't recommend this one. It will stand on it's own as a half-fold greeting card, but it starts curling in on itself in a short time. Hope this helps

Q: can these be used for invitation cards?

Yes, I would think so. I use this to make greeting cards. Nice and white paper. It isn't quite the weight of some I get at Wal Mart but I would think it would be perfect for invites.
