Very basic with nice pictures!
Purchased for homeschooling purposes. My 3 year old really wasnโt all that impressed with this book because she already knew most of the words listed. My 2 year old on the other hand was all about the โbaby dictionaryโ and liked going over the pictures with the words. My 3 year old ended up taking my 10 year olds elementary dictionary purchased for homeschooling and preferring that. This is absolutely a first dictionary that really is geared for babies. The pictures are great and itโs VERY BASIC. This maybe a good option for little ones preparing for preschool.

Perfect for my 5-year old who is just starting to ...
Perfect for my 5-year old who is just starting to learn how to spell and read in kindergarten. I looked through almost all of the children's dictionaries available on Amazon before making a purchase. The big advantages of this dictionary is that it has a picture for EVERY word, so even children who can't read at all can find the right word. Most of the other so called "picture dictionaries" only had one picture a page and tones of words with text explanations only, which is useless for someone who can't read. It's easy and intuitive to use and build the habit of looking things up. The level of the word is also appropriate for early learners - granted it's mostly nouns, some verbs and small number of adjectives, but you won't need much more than that for kindergarten. The illustrations are pretty, to the point, and well picked photos. Also a generally pleasing book to look at.

Not sure who this is good for
As with most other DK books, this dictionary is beautifully organized and fun to read. Iโm just not sure who this book is good for. I bought it for my 5 year old who is learning how to learn, but he knows 90-95% of the words so itโs of little use to him. My 3 year old knows the majority of the words but he canโt read and doesnโt find it interesting when I read entries to him. Maybe this dictionary is more for 3-4 year olds who are learning how to read.

Exactly What I Was Looking For
My oldest is 5 and just started kindergarten this year and I thought it would be a good idea to introduce a dictionary into his curriculum if I could find one that aligned with his skill level. As he can't read yet, I was looking for a dictionary that included a picture for every word, and a definition and an example sentence with the word to help expand his skills. This is exactly what I envisioned. It is beautifully designed. I only flipped through it, so I cannot attest to the in-depth quality just yet. At a glance, I would absolutely recommend it for children 5 years and up or an advanced 3 or 4 year old if you wanted to get them started early. How I plan to use this: As an introduction to dictionaries, I plan to explain to him what a dictionary is and skim through it with him- see if anything catches his eye. Then I'll explain how it works when we pick a specific picture, how the picture represents the word and then it provides an explanation of that word and then read him the sentence. After, (because the dictionary is limited to 1,000 words) I will suggest a short premade list of words that he can choose from and I will start to teach him how to look up words. I think this method can also be helped later on to introduce/reinforce 'alphabetical order'. I also might choose to have him copy the definition of the selected word because all definitions are captioned in short sentences, but it's just an idea if we want extra writing practice.

Great first Dictionary (Pictonary) for a 4 or 5 Year Old
I bought these recently because we wanted our older 7 yr old to be able to look up words instead of just asking us how to spell stuff. Well if you have two kids you know if you buy one kid something the other kid wants it so we got this dictionary for our 4 yr old. it's a great Pictionary type book. She likes to just pick it up and read through it like a regular book even though she can't read. this is great for a parent to sit down with their 4 or 5 yr old that can't read yet and read through this book with them. The pictures or big & colorful and the definitions aren't complicated so that a 4 or 5 yr old can understand them.

Delightful and Educational
I bought this book for a 3-year-old neighbor who plays with my grandsons. He speaks only Farsi and his mother is using it to teach him English. New words keep popping out of his mouth when he's here and she says he wants her to read from it to him every day. She laughingly admitted that it's helping her with her English as well. Not meant for teaching English as a second language, but this book is a delight to look at, with bright illustrations and simple definitions and pleases young ones as well as their parents. I love DK Publishing's quality and aesthetics and this book is another example of those aspects.

Lebendig und anschaulich
Was erleichtert das Lernen von Vokabeln mehr als eine Illustration und ein typischer Beispielsatz? Beides spielt hier ideal zusammen!
