The Walking Dead: Compendium Three

This compendium collects issues 97–144 of the epic comic series The Walking Dead. The story is not only a dark, graphic psychological thriller, but also filled with heartfelt emotional moments, romance, and deep moral questions. My review below is organized by volume/story arc and contains spoilers as it progresses. Art: 4.5/5 Plot: 4.5/5 Writing: 4.5/5 My Enjoyment: 4.5/5 Vol. 17: Something To Fear Rick, Carl, Andrea, and the others in Alexandria are trying to prepare for approaching Negan, but unfortunately his “Saviors” are far more than Rick or anyone expected. Safety and control are very much an illusion for the group, and there are a lot of living deaths, unfortunately on both sides. These issues was heartbreaking and some of the most brutal so far. Moments of celebration are immediately followed by devastation. Negan is such a horrifying antagonist, not only in who he is, but in what he represents and the power he has to instill fear. Vol. 18: What Comes After The group at Alexandria is on edge after Rick agrees to Negan’s terms, and everyone (especially Carl and Andrea) has strong opinions about the situation. They have to make concessions, but events shift and new allies emerge. This was an interesting, almost slow-burn volume. We get a lot of Negan and his group, which is… entertaining to say the least. He’s a chaotic, complex character. Rick is very emotional in these issues, and the story really walks the line of asking moral questions about what the “right” thing is. Vol. 19: March To War Rick has banded together the people from Hilltop and the Kingdom, along with his inside man, to take on Negan and the Saviors. But, as usual, things don’t exactly go to plan. The zombies take a back burner in these issues, and everyone is saving their bullets for the “thinkers.” This collection had more action than the last volume and kept me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. Negan is still a wild card, and I can’t tell if he’s going to regret some of his recent decisions, or if Rick will. I’m also getting really invested in some of the newer characters, which makes me nervous that something bad is going to happen. Vol. 20: All Out War Part 1 Rick is at war with Negan and has the people from Hilltop and the Kingdom on his side. They start on the offensive and gain ground with some creative allies, but of course things don’t stay positive for long. This was an amazing volume. It was nonstop action, and Negan was really in rare form in several scenes. There was also a section from Ezekiel that I’ll be thinking about for a long time. The theme of these issues could easily be called “the cost of war.” There is so much loss on both sides, and by the end it’s unclear just how much has been lost. Vol. 21: All Out War Part 2 Rick’s war with Negan continues, picking up in the middle of Negan’s brutal attack on Alexandria. His deadly weapons work as intended, causing even more unnecessary loss. Along the way, some unexpected leaders step up, and true loyalties are revealed. I was glad to see this story arc come to a conclusion, it was intense and action-packed throughout. Negan is a great villain and a good foil for Rick, but he’s also a lot to take in. I think this conclusion will have future repercussions, but I liked the way it wrapped up. I’m looking forward to the time jump and seeing what comes next for the remaining group in Volume 22: A New Beginning. Vol. 22: A New Beginning We get a time jump, years have passed and everything is thriving. Rick and Andrea are managing Alexandria, while Maggie is taking care of the Hilltop. Newcomers arrive, and there’s a clear parallel to how Rick’s group first came to Alexandria. It’s unclear who can truly be trusted. Things seem to be going a little too well, and of course new horrors are lurking just around the corner. I really enjoyed this new story arc. I did find myself wishing everyone would stop talking about how great things were, it felt incredibly ominous. The new group is a welcome addition, but their motives remain unclear. The pacing was strong, with small bits of suspense woven through the happy, slice-of-life moments. The tension builds in a calm-before-the-storm way right up until the ending, which ends with a big “OH sh*t” moment. Vol. 23: Whispers Into Screams Rick says his goodbyes and heads back to the Alexandria community, returning home to Andrea. Carl is emerging as a leading man as he establishes himself at Hilltop. But, of course, things get off to a rocky start, with conflict brewing on the inside as well as whispering zombies on the outside.I enjoyed this collection and the new, strange threat it introduces. There was an especially gross scene that made me audibly gasp, which I guess is a win to still get a reaction after so many issues. I’m liking the new tone and the direction things seem to be heading, with Carl stepping into a more mature role as a main character, although I’m not sure I was ready for him to grow up yet. But, that definitely seems to be the theme of this story arc. Vol. 24: Life and Death Everything is converging as the fair approaches. Maggie is dealing with Gregory, Carl has run off, and things with Negan’s imprisonment continue to escalate. We also see some familiar faces return. Meanwhile, Rick is preparing the communities for the big event, and of course, goes after Carl as soon as he finds out he’s missing. So much happens in this volume, and there are a lot of big moral questions raised. At first, I felt like the Whisperers weren’t going to be much of a threat, but that was definitely naive on my part. I’m anxious to see what happens next.

i won't go into detail like some pro critic, writer, just as a simple fan of both tv show and these even BETTER comic books! the comics naturally are better than the tv show, tv show is for people that hate reading or lack the attention span on reading, even books with pictures, i like both walking dead and like game of thrones the comic/books differ i'd say greatly for the most part slower sometimes fast at times or more graphic or less graphic at times, naturally, depending on the channel it's on. i do love game of throne tv show though can be very filler feeling/slow at time i guess so they don't pass up the comics, same goes for GoT show which they have passed up the books...point is TWD comics are amazing fun to read more than once! sophie is still alve maggie and the late glenn adopted her after carol killed herself in the prison, love/hate negan! people think he is the most evil villain but he lives by a code! unlike the governor who was was mor grazy in the comic books he raped michone and cut ricks hand off when first meeting him! then killed his wife and their unborn baby during the prison war! he killed tyresse not hershel in the comic, i just think they are both fresh watching it if you wanna see different people live/die and comic same thing well watch and read so you get THE FULL COMPLETE YET TWO DIFFERENT STORIES/VERSIONS!! the comics are just fun to lay back n read and enough a different aspect of what is going on! true no daryl in show but they have jesus later and he is a samurai ninja kung fu fighting mo fo! don't like that laura, ricks wifes baby lived as to many babies now as maggie as in comic tv show (so far) does live! so ricks baby is pointless to be honest giving maggies baby after glenn has died a much less impact, sadly! also rick is still in love with andrea in the comic she is a bad bad mo fo!!! seriously bad! i would say smarter even badder than rick too!!! especially when it comes to negan! maggie is a bad mo fo too!!! machone is too but ends up getting with ezikeil not ever rick so that is strange as a fist comic reader (since 1980!) but i do enjoy both if TWD was on HBO the gore killing rape scene(s) woulda been disturbing! like the comics! wish rick got his hand cut off like the comic but understand why they didn't even kirkman regrets doing it in the comic but i like it. OH sad sad thing i hated in tv show was DALE being a whining cry baby weakling pacifist! in the comic he was a true rough tough old goat gangster! and showed andrea how to shoot and become the great she is now still in the comic! i think if you hate comics this more adult themed great comic/graphic novel is worth owning! as writing this now the whisperer war 1-6 just ended and they are on a new chapter and negan broke he bat across beta's back, yet he lives even after the war yes a spoiler he buries his bat has a funeral for it haha in 6 of 6 whisperer war issue #162! now issue #163 is at and the whisperer's and beta lead to alexandria a unseen of huge of horde of walkers! which break through negan and rick even work fighting side by side now even though negan still has a smart "butt" mouth and the issue ends till march so...now i collect single issues which i hate doing or if you do too wait months sadly till the next 5-6 comic story line volume comes out, in march 1-6 of the whisperer war in volume 27 will come out but i will get it then sell the single issues, you don't get the cool covers in the TPB collecting volumes not the 3 huge compendiums! BUT, i say if you are a first time collector of buying the TWD comics/HIGHLY WORTH IT even if it is the only comic(s) you choose to EVER own!! this is it! way different than the show still show still different than the comics where it count really! but both great to read/watch though the reading is 99 percent better the tv show is just a visual for the non readers...but i SAY the comics are a must own! if NEW to collecting avoid most well first pricey 24 volumes easy and on amazon DO IT THIS WAY TO GET YOUR COLLECTION STARTED FAST AND EASY!!!....ON AMAZON WAY CHEAPER i started with the 3 compendiums at $34 each!! instead of $65 at comic shops!!! SO, new readers own these and start buying here easy 'n cheaper! in this order!! TWD COMPENDIUM ONE-ISSUES #1-48, TWD COMPENDIUM TWO-ISSUES #49-96, TWD COMPENDIUM THREE #97-144, (then) VOLUME 25 NO TURNING BACK, VOLUME 26 CALL TO ARMS, now wait till march buy VOLUME 27 THE WHISPERER WAR! or buy the issues if you wanna catch up then sell 'em, then buy the volumes! but by the time you read all these the whisperer war volume will be out! and the next volume too but like me if you read fast as i said march #163 of the new on will be out, after the 4-6 issues they wait like 2 months before they make the a VOLUME it will be years before they make compendium four! so stick with the issues to be up-to-date! or wait till march for volume 27 the whisperer war! now this new one is out 1st issue out now in feb. i think BETA lived cos WE MAY SEE HIM in the future i THINK HE AND NEGAN need a showdown!!!! for what he did to alpha!!! The horrific story of survival in the zombie apocalypse continues with loads of bloodshed and the premise of a hopeless future. The undead continue to roam this ravaged world, and the few remaining survivors represent a greater threat to mankind than the zombies themselves. This latest chapter in The Walking Dead saga continues its exploration of how desperate people respond to desperate situations; it's hard-hitting and no one is safe. Like the two preceding compendiums, Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead: Compendium Three, which collects Issues #97-144, is an exceptional companion piece to the phenomenal TV series on AMC. With over one-thousand pages of raw, uncensored material that showcases Charlie Adlard's often beautiful and grisly artwork, this weighty tome is cumbersome and not what you would consider light reading—literally. Thicker than the previous installments by a good margin, this compendium is not so much a book as it is a blunt weapon. Actually, it’s so heavy you could easily kill a walker with it! The Walking Dead: Compendium Three ushers in a new era of pain and torment for protagonist Rick Grimes. Just when things are beginning to seem optimistic, events occur that change everything, affecting each character on a deeper level. The world as Rick knows it is completely turned on its head, reorganized, and reestablished. Ideologies clash when new grand foes surface in the form of The Saviors, led by Negan—an over-the-top baddie who you’ll love to hate—and the Whisperers, led by Alpha, who've abandoned all vestige of civilization and learned to live amongst the undead. Rick's dream of rebuilding civilization is tested as he, Carl, Andrea, Maggie, Michonne, and the residents of Alexandria come into contact with other communities that have developed their own methods of survival. The struggle is felt, the turmoil is believable, and the aggressive relationship between Rick and Negan is far more compelling than that of Rick and the Governor. The Walking Dead at its nucleus is a story about what happens when the human heart comes into conflict with another human heart (which is vaguely more Faulknerian than the human heart conflicting with a zombified heart). Or, at least that’s where the story is most effective. Interestingly enough, what began way back in Issue #2 as a small band of hunter-gatherers scavenging food and supplies from the ruins of civilization has gradually evolved into a city-state system with fortified and independent communities—the Alexandria Safe-Zone, the Hilltop Colony, Ezekial’s Kingdom, and The Saviors—engaging in interdependent trade, agricultural fairs, and apprenticeship programs. However, conflict between factions ensues when Negan and The Saviors (in classic mobster fashion) demand tribute from the other communities in exchange for protection…conflict that quickly escalates from small tribal skirmishes to all-out war. Rick soon realizes that the path to victory necessitates more than just a well-trained army and heavy weaponry, but political savvy as well. Some readers might take issue with Negan’s colorful language. Negan’s cursing is so excessive that you’d swear this comic was penned by ill-mannered teens. Negan drops more f-bombs than the collective cast of Goodfellas. As a general rule, expletives should be used to emphasize a point, not replace every word in a sentence. Atmospheric and suspenseful, The Walking Dead: Compendium Three contains a fine blend of skull-cracking violence, exhilarating triumph, and shocking tragedy. Philosophically speaking, no new ground is covered—the recurring theme of man’s struggle to maintain humanity in the face of such horror continues—however, there are some game-changing moments in here that will tear your heart out, impale it on a stake, and beat it with a baseball bat laced with barbed-wire.

Phenomenal read! Engaging from beginning to end with gut wrenching storytelling. Finished this book within 7-8 gripping sessions of reading.

The Walking Dead, Compendium 3 collects comics #97-144, the same comics collected in volumes 17-24. As you can see, it’s quite a bit fatter than the first and second compendiums, despite collecting the same number of volumes. MILD SPOILERS THROUGHOUT It’s impossible to discuss almost 50 issues without getting just a little spoilery. I promise I won’t give away any more than necessary. Three is the best of the compendiums. Compendium One was frequently The Walking Dead at its best but a little uneven. Compendium Two suffered from The Walking Dead’s long post-Governor malaise. The Walking Dead has always been better with a villainous focus. It is, after all, at its core about the human heart in conflict with another human heart (which is slightly more Faulknerian than the human heart in conflict with the zombie heart). Or at least that is where it is most effective. The Walking Dead certainly isn’t, to my chagrin, about a fight against nature for survival (but put us city boys in the woods with no one to hand us food and we’d struggle mightily). The human heart in conflict with itself stuff is often very good in isolation, but it has never managed to give the story the same narrative force as squaring off against a big foe. Compendium Three picks up shortly after the introduction of the Saviors and introduces Negan (and Lucille), who makes the Governor look like a pansy (and has a better sense of humor). Thus begins a conflict that will span most of the compendium and get very, very bloody. It’s the first compendium set in “civilization,” with the main characters never wandering without a base. It appears at this point that we have permanent communities. It also features a long jump in time (roughly two years later). The comic finally admits to the realities of time. The survivors are now riding horses and have settled into a quasi-normal life. This, and the compendium, last just long enough to set up a new grand foe.

Everything went well, the package came just fine, though there were some slight minor issues with the cover, otherwise it is in really good condition . For the third one, it should be the best one of all!
