I first heard about this book when I read an interview in Vice Magazine with author Ross Patterson. He claimed that the novel harkens back to a time when men were men, and that we can learn a thing or two from the ways of our forefathers. I decided to pick it up and see what sort of valuable insights it might contain. What I got was an action fest of sex and gore, with a surprising amount of narrative depth and humor thrown in for good measure. The novel takes place in the mid-1800s and follows Saint James Street James on a roller coaster of fortunes. From being the richest, most badass guy in town to the most down-and-out, St. James takes it all in his manly stride. At first I was worried that the novel would be an unapologetic, Tucker Max-esque douche parade, but St. James' narration evolves with surprising depth. He gives us insight into not only his awesomeness, but also his weaknesses (few and stereotypically masculine as they are). The book is legitimately hilarious at times, mixing situational humor and modern pop-culture references evenly. The sex is graphic, but not overwrought. It's a fun and easy read that will keep the pages turning for the sake of the story just as much as the laughs. I'm not sure how much modern men can actually learn from At Night She Cries, While He Rides His Steed, but they'll definitely enjoy reading it. Review: Changed how I look at life - There’s only one way to review this in a way that does it justice, and it’s with a story of why I need to order a second one. It all started when the book arrived in the mail, it was a calm day, sun shining bright over my small Florida town, a cool, refreshing breeze in the air. An old man yelling from his pickup as alpacas cross the street. My neighbor noticed the size of the package and asks if it’s a new book. What genre and what it’s about. She laments that she wishes her husband would be interested in stories such as this. In the distance you hear her husband let out a soft grunt as he stows his tools before going inside. Later that night I’m at the bar, I’m a bit of an introvert so I bring my book with me. Order my drinks and get to reading. An hour or so passes by before this woman approaches me, asks what book I’m reading, what it’s about, the whole thing. We talk for a few hours and end up going back to her place. She takes off her clothes and turns out the light, revealing the Bat Signal shining on her ceiling. “What is that?” I ask “Oh that’s just my night light” She then pulls me into the bed and- *another hour passes* I look up, and there’s a man standing over us, dressed as freaking Batman. “Give me the book”, he exclaimed Confused, honestly frightened, I hand over the book, put on my clothes and leave.
