Metal , Seems to made a lot better than some I've seen.

Can this be used overhead/vertical?

Yes, but overhead use the lock for sure.

Is it necessary to have the 5” version if you have the 10”? Are there specific situations that the 10” would not be usable?

I was thinking if you were measuring an inside corner the 10" would not have enough slide distance to reach all the way to the corner. Using 90 degree corner, the 10" would need to be able to reach about 5" whereas the 5" would only need to reach about 2" to get to the full inside corner.

I bought the 10-in and the 5 in so that I could join them together. there's no way to join these two together I'm thinking of returning it.
