Smoooooooth face is what you get
So to start off, I had been using Dorco razors for the past 8yrs or so. While I love how they feel and how easy it is to use a standard safety razor, I figured there has to be a cheaper yet better alternative. Eureka!!! Old school double-edged safety razors. I asked my Dad about them as I know he used to use them back in his youth. He told me they would always cut him and that I would be nuts to start shaving with one in this day in age. So I took his advice and bought the Dorco's once again. After about another month or so, I got the itch to try a old school razor once again and had been doing research for some time on double-edge razors and how to use them, handling techniques, etc. I finally bit the bullet and got me a Viking Chieftain as from what I had seen, would probably be a good beginner old school razor. When the Chieftain finally arrived I was honestly marveled by the fit and the polish. It looks great in my hand and is very sturdy. Plus that shine screams that I'm a classy gent. Eh or so I thought. The handle while small does give me a lot of finesse into how I use the razor. Now onto the first shave. I had purchased a badger brush and got my Cremo Shave Cream that I had been using prior to the Viking. After I worked up too much lather and coated my face so much that I looked like a brown Santa Claus, I began to shave. For those out there that aren't sure about how to shave, don't do what I did and laugh so hard that you end up with cream all over the counter because you thought it was funny to see how much lather your face could actually hold. You should have enough on to coat your face, not create peaks of creamy white goodness all over the place and then decide to style it in various ways to amuse yourself. The shave itself was phenomenal. Granted the first blades I used were the mild (more flexible and not feudal Japan Katana sharp) ones that came in the box so I could get used to the feel and master my handling technique of the blade. I had reached out to the Viking team because I couldn't master the way of the blade and they promptly got back to me and let me know that I should be using the legendary 3-fingered hold so that I may glide the blade along my face. Also be sure to let the weight of the head do the work for you. Be sure to have it at roughly a 30-degree angle too. Short strokes work best. Don't be afraid to apply more cream if you have funky patches that you have to shave in multiple angles to get smooth. After about 2 weeks of this practice-until-perfection shaving technique I had at last mastered the way of the face blade. Not only is using the Viking relaxing when I shave as it gives me time to think, but I also have noticed that my skin is less prone to irritation as was the way of the Dorcos. My skin is like a baby's butt when I finish shaving and my girlfriend loves the smoothness. I shave roughly every other day and ALWAYS use a fresh blade each time. Also once you master using the blade, definitely upgrade to much sharper ones and I would even recommend a sampler pack so you can find which blades work best for you. As there are so many, the sampler packs will help you to figure out what you like and don't like. I am now particularly fond of the Wilkinson Sword razor blades because of this. I will definitely be buying another Viking product soon. Oh and don't forget to get a stand to show off your razor and badger brush. The looks you get from family and your lady will have you feeling like a daft gent in no time, especially when they ask you what you shave with. You just tell them that you went to the Viking School of Razor.

A blade truly worthy of the All-Father!
BY ODIN'S BEARD! THIS RAZOR IS GLORIOUS! Just got my Limited edition "Odin" version of The Chieftain razor in today. It was my first experience with a safety razor. Ive been using cartridge razors all of my adult life. I had no idea what I was missing out on! I read some enlightening literature on safety razors and their superior shave quality over cartridge/disposable razors and it piqued my interest. I also got tired of the ludicrous prices that companies charge for replacement cartridges, so I decided to take the plunge! I came across Vikings Blade here on Amazon and their Chieftain model immediately caught my eye. I was instantly taken aback to my childhood. My Great Grandfather used a safety razor that was VERY similar looking to it. Its the only razor I ever saw him use! I remember sitting in the bathroom and watching him shave with it many times. Upon opening the the box, I felt as if I had just gazed upon a timeless dwarven treasure! As I firmly grasped its handle and lifted the wieldy blade from its cradle, this mere mortal felt unworthy to bask in its magnificent presence. A piece of craftsmanship that would make the Sons of Ivaldi or even Eitri and Brokker burn with jealousy and envy after marveling in its glorious perfection! The razor of my Great Grandfather was not able to be passed down unto me, due to its tragic destruction during the Ragnarok. However, I feel that this razor shall be passed on for generations, lest a jealous god come and take it from this mortal's cold, dead hands and claim it for their own first ! All humor aside, this blade has truly impressed me! I had to do a double-take in the mirror as I began to take my first strokes because the shave was so damn smooth that I could not believe my eyes! I shouted aloud to my wife "What manner of sorcery is this?!". If I hadn't seen the hair missing from my face, I would have thought that, in my cautious first approach, I didn't angle the blade enough to cut any hair off! It glided across my skin and effortlessly cut through my semi-coarse facial hair, leaving nothing but baby-smooth skin behind. It was the closest shave I've ever experienced No tugging, no pulling, just smooth sailing for this Viking ship. ;-) I bought a pack of the Vikings Blade brand Super Blades too, not realizing that the razor does come with 5 of them already to use. Their blades are considered to be less aggressive than the popular Astra or Feather brand blades that VB recommends for safety razor veterans and people with coarse facial hair. However, the shave their blades provided me was fantastic! Supposedly I haven't released the Odin's full potential with these blades, so mayhaps I'll have to try some of those in the future once Im accustomed to wielding these already impressive blades! Seriously, this thing simply radiates quality. The pictures don't even do it justice. Once you see it with your own eyes and feel it in your hands, all will make sense. If you've never used a safety razor before, just do a little research on the different types of blades, techniques and skin preparation products beforehand and I'm confident you'll experience a superior shave over any cartridge razor out there! UPDATE: Flight of The Valkyrie! I got my wife interested in converting to a safety razor as well. Before picking up another handle, she tried mine with one of the "mild" blades and absolutely loved it! She said they were perfect for shaving her legs. Now she doesn't want to go back to cartridge razors either! So it looks like we'll be buying a long handle safety razor soon too!

Good quality razor that gives a great shave with a good quality blade
The Vikings Blade Chieftain is a very good quality razor that is solidly made and has good heft. I bought the "Vintage Bronze and Ancient Dust" model to replace an old Gillette adjustable safety razor with the same twist open mechanism. The blade angle is very good and the razor opens easily for blade changes and cleaning. It comes nicely packaged in a box with a magnetic clasp and a box of Swedish-made Viking blades. The Viking blades are low quality and grabby. I suggest you just toss them or give them to someone you don't like. I tried one of the blades for a week and it wasn't good. I swapped that blade out for a platinum coated Feather blade and immediately got a smooth, clean shave with no grabbing. If you are new to shaving, do your face a favor and buy good quality blades like Feather. Don't buy into the nonsense about "beginner blades". Cheap, dull blades will frustrate you, cut you and not make shaving the satisfying experience it should be. Pair this handle with a good blade and you won't be disappointed.

This thing is equal parts art and functionality. Iconic as anything. The Rose gold plating is the perfect example, it prevents corrosion and is also stylish. The stainless steel is electroplated black. Giving style and durability as well as grip. It costs $20 alone to add that kind of plating to something like this. This is the highest level durability, build and design I've ever experienced for a safety razor. Nice features: The sides are labeled so you can actually orient which side you're using and can rotate the blade to different sides on different days and then flip it to use the bottom of the blade. Giving 4 days of shaving for each blade. Just ensure to clean well and keep the blade sterile. I think the value is really high. I'm going to keep this thing for decades. I don't see myself looking for the next better thing, this is it. I thought about buying it as a gift to some people. The case is beautiful, and the mirror and the holding tray for blade cartridges is a nice touch. I'm just really impressed with the design and build quality. Plus it was made in Australia. I'm happy to support a fellow commonwealth business.
