How to See Color and Paint It Review: great instructional book - This book was recommended to me by an artist I took a workshop with.... I bought it on his recommendation that it would help me with understanding color... I have been engaging in the book slowly doing all that is recommended and as of yet have not gotten to the specific tasks.... still working on the color wheel and mixing the specific colors... excellent.... already have gotten my moneys worth out of it!! Review: This is the greatest book on painting I have ever read. - I was reccomended this book by one of my professors who is a rather established artist in her own right. She told me the book was no nonsense the best book on painting instruction she has ever read and I agree with her 100 percent. If only I had had access to this book earlier. But at least I own a copy, before the prices were so inflated. Such an amazing book, it teaches you how to "see" color, and the technical applications of applying paint. Any one who is serious about painting should invest in this incredible book.

Overpriced
Nice book, I’m glad I got it, but I thought a little overpriced.

Simple, Self-guided color recognition and application by a master
The beauty of this masterpiece by Arthur Stern is that he provides exquisitely detailed exercises that facilitate the learner's (ostensibly painters but valuable to any visual artists) seeing colors within objects, their shadows and their surroundings, and subsequently replicating those colors in their works of art. A brilliant course by a consummate guide.

The one problem with this wonderful (maybe the best) color how-to is the authors ideas about how the student will be able to setup their still life according to the book. It seems the author forgot the properties of light, he thinks you can be in a dark room - with light shining only on the still life - and still paint. I found it impossible to set up the still life according to the book, so I assume he wrote that without really doing it. Yes I'm aware he's a well established art teacher, but Welshmen it comes to creating and writing people do take short cuts. Do get the book, juts come up with your own way to see the light the way the author wants you to. His method will not work. Unless you can manipulate photons.

Buy a used copy from the 1980s.
I read the reviews about the new editions. Apparently the new publisher cheaped out and produced a crappy copy of a great book. This book was originally published by Watson-Guptill in the 1980s. The hardcover edition came out in 1984. And the softcover edition came out in 1988. I bought a 1988 softcover edition from a prime seller here on Amazon for just under $30. The print quality is very good.

This book is wonderful! It is concise in it's exercises and builds on prior examples. Very informative! I highly recommend this text. It is about seeing and understanding color & shape ...about naming & reproducing the color seen. This book is a great manual.

Es un gran libro, imprescindible para captar y practicar el color. Con algo de inglés y el traductor Google se estudia fácilmente.

I think it was worth paying extra to have an original hardback copy. I haven't started the projects yet but they do look very good and well worth the effort.
