I have owned a RAILBLAZA brand rod holder on my other kayak for over a decade and it's held up impressively well, so when I needed another one for a different kayak I knew just what to get. This design is just as sturdy as the old design, but the retaining clip requires you to slide it forward and back just by the small nubs that stick out. It requires a LOT of force to lock/unlock which is good for preventing accidents, but is a step backwards from the old larger button design.

So far it seems to work really good with my kayak. Haven't had a problem yet.

I've been trying different Rod Holders, from super inexpensive (about $10) to about $45, and these Railblaza's are right in the middle. Overall, the material quality feels good, however it is not as convenient to use as three other holders I've bought. To adjust the angle, you have to really undo the screw quite a bit, adjust, and screw back down. Definitely a two handed adjustment process. Ideally, I guess that you'll pick a position and just leave it there instead of adjusting. To rotate is even a bigger challenge---move the plastic rentention piece (which took a minute to even figure out), pull the holder COMPLETELY out of the adapter, set back, and re-engage the locking clip. Even the cheapest holder I've got is easier to rotate. But, despite the poor ergonomics, the unit is STRONG. The plastic/resin is high quality and you can feel it. I'll have to eventually order the railblaza LARGER unit, the holder 2 to see if it's better.

Install was tooless and swift. Went on in two minutes. The fit is nice, holds several different sized rods no sweat. Accommodates different reels as well. Then I went to the lake and ended up flipping my kayak 3 times and my rod DID NOT come loose from the holder. It opens easily with a flip of the hand when u want, holds tight when I need. Great product, excellent value.
