A complete, practical, and entertaining guide to using the best ingredients and minimal equipment to create flavorful brews—including wildcrafted meads, bragots, t’ej, grog, honey beers, and more! “ A great guide . . . full of practical information and fascinating lore.”—Sandor Ellix Katz, author of The Art of Fermentation Ancient societies brewed flavorful and healing meads, ales, and wines for millennia using only intuition, storytelling, and knowledge passed down through generations―no fancy, expensive equipment or degrees in chemistry needed. In Make Mead Like a Viking, homesteader, fermentation enthusiast, and self-described “Appalachian Yeti Viking” Jereme Zimmerman summons the bryggjemann of the ancient Norse to demonstrate how homebrewing mead―arguably the world’s oldest fermented alcoholic beverage―can be not only uncomplicated but fun. Inside, readers will learn techniques for brewing: Sweet, semi-sweet, and dry meads Melomels (fruit meads) Metheglins (spiced meads) Ethiopian t’ej (honey wine) Flower and herbal meads Bragots Honey beers Country wines Viking grog And there’s more for aspiring Vikings to explore, including: The importance of local and unpasteurized honey for both flavor and health benefits What modern homebrewing practices, materials, and chemicals work—but aren’t necessary How to grow and harvest herbs and collect wild botanicals for use in healing, nutritious, and magical meads, beers, and wines How to use botanicals other than hops for flavoring and preserving mead, ancient ales, and gruits The rituals, mysticism, and communion with nature that were integral components of ancient brewing Whether you’ve been intimidated by modern homebrewing’s cost or seeming complexity in the past or are boldly looking to expand your current brewing and fermentation practices, Zimmerman’s welcoming style and spirit will usher you into exciting new territory. Grounded in history and mythology, but―like Odin’s ever-seeking eye―focusing continually on the future of self-sufficient food culture, Make Mead Like a Viking is a practical and entertaining guide for the ages. “ Adventurous mead makers or brewers who want to move beyond the basics will find plenty to savor here.”— Library Journal Review: Easy to follow and apply - I am also new to brewing mead. I can highly recommend the book make mead like a viking by Jeremy Zimmerman. Not only is it well written, with some interesting bits on the vikings, it includes details on how to make a staggering vatiety of meads. It is easy to follow and well worth the price tag. I came across an old blog Jeremy did and I sent him an email asking for some advice. He was super helpful and insightful. I subsequently bought the book and am very glad I did. You need to be a chemist to get involved in brewing. I was put off brewing beer because it seemed to be such complicated process. Mead can be brewed as simply or complicated as you like. This book is good not only for people new to brewing, but is also great for those interested in the vikings and gaining insight into their life that is often excluded. This book is also great for anyone looking to try brewing like our ancestors did Review: Best mead book yet. - The writer is entertaining and informative. If I only bought one book on making mead…this is it.

Highly informative on brewing and so much more!
This book was excellent! Jereme's wit and wisdom shines through on this educational book, taking readers through the lore of mead, the importance of bees, and the techniques used in meadmaking that is graspable for any beginner. Although there are a few recipes, the book focuses more on why those ingredients work, and how to use them to make your own delicious beverage of the gods! I read the whole thing in just a few days and already have a batch of mead and ginger bug brewing!

Great for mead-making, but tune out the part about honey bees
This book balances cleanliness with practicality, which sounds right if you want to make mead "like a Viking." Interesting background on myth and legend, the culture of "the Vikings," and history give this book a helpful context to the theme. It includes herbal and fruit notes as mead additives you may not find elsewhere, at least not as presented here. Its a unique, practical, and natural approach to mead-making. But, the author--who admits he is not (yet) a beekeeper--assumes his Viking approach will also translate to bee-keeping. As a beekeeper and mead-maker, here is the truth: if your mead goes bad, oh well. If your bees all die, you've been bad. Beekeeping is a minor part of this book, but it's in there. Make mead like a Viking. But treat your bees like a modern person, know what you're doing, and give them medicine if they need it. Five stars for the mead topic, minus one for the bad info on bees.

Perfect every time…
I bought this book as a gift for my son-in-law and he loves it. He has made many of the recipes and has read it covered to cover to make many homemade recipes. He said it was one of the best gifts he has received and it was full of excellent information, he also said his mead turns out perfectly every time!

How did they do it in the old days?
I bought Zimmerman's book early on, but didn't really look at it until recently. I'm still a newby and made a couple of batches so far using other instructions I found on the internet last spring; these were more step-by-painstaking-step, strictly following prescribed regimen/procedures, and were about as much as I could handle without getting overwhelmed by the science of it all. I just wanted to try and see if I could make some mead without it being horrible. I eventually got scared off by all of the chemicals other mead makers added to their brew and wanted to find a different approach; it never made sense that the ancients had access to these chemicals - how did they make mead without them? I only very recently started carefully looking at the viking book again (sorry! lol), and was struck by the laid-back attitude this author has, making the process less stressful and more enjoyable. I also appreciated his section called "Thoughts on Enjoying Alcohol in Moderation." He has a lot of interesting comments that made me think, including "...taking the time to slowly drink and truly enjoy a beverage that has been fashioned with care -- particularly in the company of others who are also willing to take the time to savor the fruits of the bottle." That kind of says it all to me. :) Today I'm going to attempt to make a small batch of melomel and another of metheglin. Cheers!

this book is a good starting point
When researching which book to buy for starting out, this book is a good starting point. Not too technical, and gives you some ideas for how to begin. The recipes leave a little room for development, and at the same time just really drives home the premise that mead brewing can be as complicated or simple as you want it.

Long live the Vikings Mead!
I always wanted to make mead. This book was fantastic and with loads of intelligent things to say about nature, bees (which I never knew) and wonderful recipes. Unfortunately after reading the book I made the decision I did not have the time for making mead but one day, I will. For the moment, I would not subject anyone to my swill of boars piss. But, very educational, historical and enlightening. A genuinely great read for anyone thinking to make mead the natural way.

A combination of instructions, ideas, history, folklore and more...
This is a great book. Everything you need to get started all the way through to mastering the process and creating your own concoctions is in here. I really liked how it was structured with both history and folklore/mythology to beef it out. Also comes with a number of recipes for meads, metheglins, bragots, t'ej... all sorts of stuff that you can make with honey. 8/10!
