FUN! Absolutely Sparkling Treble Response
AP-80 Likes Treble response Screen resolution and color HyBy operating system (album, properties) Size Solid, has mass More forgiving MSEB than on R3 I finally got my hands on this player. I had ordered it from China but not until being offered on Amazon was I able to obtain one. I have an entire collection of DAPs (digital audio players). I started a collection as a hobby in 2016 and ended it here, with this unit. I have a great collection of players and am content to end collecting them. I really want to be able to enjoy them and I also want to live a long life. Since the batteries cannot be changed in any of my players, if I really like a unit, I will buy more than one unit to serve as a replacement. My first impression of the AP-80 was neutral. Mine came with a gray silicone case. Perfect. The most recent players are so much better than the ones from just one year ago. It's a conspiracy, but the last iteration of players totally and completely meet my musical needs and with this model, and the Shanling M5s, I am done collecting these beautiful, amazingly fine sounding music players. This player falls somewhere in between the Shanling M0 and the HyBy R3. I am so impressed with all 3 of these players. Each one serves a specific function. The Hidizs AP-80 excels in its hi-end. It has absolutely ridiculously crystal clear high-frequency audio. The AP-80 uses the same operating system as the HyBy R3, including its MSEB sound tuning system. The system is more dynamic on the R3 and the R3 has a more musical platform, for example, its MSEB sound tuning system will distort much easier than the one on the AP-80. The AP-80, however, is capable of tuning its MSEB sound to almost any position without “popping”/distorting on certain passages. It excels in my computer room, where I have it wired into a European model Pioneer SX-757, which is a 1990s era 100 WPC RMS @ 8 ohm receiver and a pair of JBL Studio L Series 820 bookshelf speakers that were specifically made for the AP-80, or so it seems. These speakers have two tweeters, one 3/4” mylar-dome ultra-high frequency driver, one, one inch pure titanium high frequency transducer, 4” mid and 6” woofer (neighbors!). These speakers were made specifically for high resolution music. This player, the Hidizs (I am learning how to spell the name, it is a tricky one to learn!) AP-80 sparkles when I turn the amp on. I truly enjoy listening to the AP-80 and make excuses to go into the computer room and listen. I have to mention (burying it here) that when I turn the external power amp on and turn the volume up to 10'o'clock, even less, there exists an audible radio frequency pitch coming from the screen. It's not loud enough to interfere with my enjoyment of the AP-80, not noticeable when listening to music. It has something to do with the power. It only makes the noise when plugged into a/c power. It does not make the noise when running off of the battery. Increasing/ decreasing the Brightness changes the pitch. Non-the-less, filtering the noise should be taken for granted in a high-resolution player, and none of my other many players show signs of the screen causing audible noise in the audio when running off a/c. I ordered a second AP-80 and that is how I figured out it was coming from the power. The menu works quite well. It has an adjustment called “Soundfield” that does not exist on the most updated version of software on the HyBy R3, and that's where Hidizs got the operating system. I have the “Soundfield” adjustment turned all the way up too. It makes a big difference. The AP-80 is about the same size as the Shanling M1, but much more solid. There are a lot of new model DAPs out right now. The fact that I have incorporated this player into my everyday listening means I like it a lot because I have many different players to choose from. The AP-80 has the clearest, most crystal clear treble of any player I have listened to and its overall sound can be adjusted in literally thousands of different configurations. Its sound tuning system is very forgiving, allowing the listener to adjust the sound to some almost ridiculous results without distorting. When I find my camera, if they let me, I'll show the AP-80, M0 and R3 side-by-side. I can't find my camera. The AP-80 is a 100% solid contender in the DAP market and should be considered by anyone looking to purchase a fun, great sounding player at a reasonable price.

A pleasant surprise
I was very skeptical about buying this product but for above average reviews on YouTube vlogs. I had already purchased the Sony Walkman NW- A105 as well as the NW-A45. So, I had some reference points. In a word, this product is "surprising". I didn't expect this level of quality from a product in this price range. This unit has a few major things going for it vs its Sony Walkman counterparts. First things first, the Sony Walkman music transfer to a micro SD card on a Mac is a serious pain in the ass and is uncomfortably glitchy. On this Hidisz ap80 pro- x, it's a breeze. Just put your micro sd card into the unit and then select "Update Database" and within a minute or two, you are good to. The sound of the Hidisz is on the bright side, but not uncomfortable at all. I tested this out with the Meze 99 Classics as well as the Massdrop/Sennheiser HD6xx. With a normal 3.5 mm, the Hidisz can drive the Meze's with no problem. With the Senneiser, it can't. So, I bought a pair of balanced cables and plugged them into the headphones and the 2.5mm "balanced" headphone jack on the unit and the difference was incredible. It could drive the Sennheiser (300ohm impedance) with no problem without a headphone amp. Incredible is the now the word I have to use. All of this in a tiny unit for under $200 at the time I bought these. The value is outstanding and I would not hesitate to recommend them. The user interface is easy and fuss free. With all of this said, here are a few things to note and consider: 1. The newest Sony Walkman NW-A105 sounds a bit better. The sound is more full and drawn out, it is noticeable. However the Sony is $350 vs the Hidisz at around $200. The Sony Walkman interface is ok, but, who the hell wants an android device sucking up all of that battery life. I really don't need to be online to enjoy music- otherwise, I would use my phone. The difference in sound is not worth the price if you are watching your pennies. 2. If you hook up the Hidisz to a headphone amp (I have a Modi/Magni Heresey Schiit stack and can get through about two albums of about 2 hours until it drains the battery on the Hidisz. As such, you can get around this battery drain by getting balanced cables on the 6xx or using a headphone like the Meze 99 classics which does not require a lot of juice to drive it. 3. The sound on the Sony Walkman NW-A45 (a few years older a model that the Sony Walkman NW-A105) is not as good as the Hidisz (regular 3.5) jack. Go figure. But, I like this model Walkman because you are not connected to Wifi and the battery life is great compared to the terrible battery life on the Walkman NW-A105. So, in reality, you should choose between the Hidisz and the NW-A105. Again if you want a slightly better sound with terrible battery life, annoying Android bloatware, a VERY confusing and cumbersome process of transferring files to the external micro sd card, and a cost of almost twice as much, go with the Walkman. But, in my opinion, the better value with almost as good as sound goes to the Hidisz hands down. You simply cannot beat this for under $200. It's easy to use and again, "surprisingly" good if not great. The only reason I am giving this a 4 star rating is because as a device there are better options out there. If I were grading it on the value, it would be 5 starts. But, strictly on the product itself, it's a solid 4 star. I did a lot of research on this before I bought all three DAP's. I am telling you, the Hidisz is no joke.

Great small music player
This music player is a great choice for someone who wants: Small size, high sound quality, has corded headphones/IEMs, and still cares about value. I think it's the perfect replacement for using a smartphone as a portable music player, since phones are all ditching the headphone jack, getting so big and expensive, and this removes the risk of losing/breaking that important phone while exercising listening to music. I got the AP80 Pro for that and love it. I was (pleasantly) surprised at how small it is - the photo shows it for comparison next to a regular playing card and a quarter. It comes with a silicone case so you can choose to keep it 'naked' and enjoy its aluminum build, or case it for protection. I love that it has a touchscreen, which mostly works pretty well for such a small screen, and has physical controls too. The sound is noticeably better than my phone or laptop, and it can go much louder. The main downside I've found is the screen is hard to see in even cloudy daylight, and on screens with tiny widgets (like MSEB sound adjust), the small touchscreen can make it hard to move the controls. Also, the AP80 has no internal storage. It requires a microSD card to store any music.

Not practical for everyday use, but good sound quality.
I want to like the device but my dap feels like a lemon. The sound quality is good its give new life to my sound monitoring headphones. But the thoughtfulness while making device may be missing some aspects. The device stops playing music randomly when on bluetooth. It reboots several times even when in use. It is not able to connect to car audio. And keeps rebooting when connect as storage to car audio. When streaming through bluetooth on device it suddenly stops puting out sound even the music is streaming. Now it only wakes up when I plug it in a usb for power. Dosent wake up. Pros: - minimal design, small footprint. - sound quality is good. - can be used as amp for many devices. - supports hi-res on bluetooth. Cons: - the practically application like full day use is not possible Small battery life. - the random reboot. - dosent connect to car audio via bluetooth. -reboot loop when connected as storage.

It’s all that in a tiny package
You can all the specs on this in the listing itself so I’m not wasting any space on that. I want to say it is amazing how much is packed into such a small unit. We’ve come a long way from the portable Walkman tape player or cd - so much so it boggles the mind. Qualify of this unit is great. Sound more importantly is top notch as expect and tweakability of the sound is also possible in ways far exceeding mere EQ of which it also has. The ways I refer to related to musical characteristics such as bass and sibilance for both high and low - emphasis or bringing vocals forward or pushing them down. Crispness of sound. These characteristics are easier to understand in terms of the ambience you want to create. Also these characteristics may change from headset to headset. So saving these profiles for easy retrieval is a great feature to have. I believe this unit represents several years of improvement in terms of specs and is a good place to be for the next couple of years. Also the features it has in terms of variation of decoding capabilities is very wide and good to see. The size of it is Both good and bad thing in that it is convenient and small but verging or fiddly. Components are well integrated and functional and other the unit fairly intuitive to manage. I like it a lot. I do recommend it

Good sound bad user interface
After 3 months of use I really have mixed feelings about this device. It's the first HiRes music player I've owned and sometimes I'm really impressed and other times I'm frustrated with it. First of all it's TINY. Way smaller than it needs to be. That means the battery is much smaller than it could be. Doesn't last nearly as long as I'd like. For such a small touchscreen it looks good and works well. The frustration comes from the User Interface. It defaults to showing all your songs in alphabetical order. Really? Does anyone want to see all their songs in order by name? And there's no way to set a default view. I want to see the folders I've created. I have to click multiple times to finally display the folders. Dumb. Sound quality is good with some caveats: when listening through my stereo there's often clicks or pops between songs. No idea why. These are HiRes FLAC files I purchased. Plus the initial second or so (maybe 1/2 second?) of the song doesn't play. It's like it hasn't started outputting any signal when it starts playing the song. Annoying. Minor annoyance: step counter? E-book reader? On a postage stamp sized screen? Dumb. Remove them and fix the rest of the UI issues with a firmware update and I'll add a star. Often when I go to listen to music the battery is dead. No Idea why. Fortunately it can play music while charging. Pros: easy to add all my music to a microSD card and insert it in the player. As long as I have a tool to insert it into the slot. My fingernail won't do it. Supports large cards too. Awesome to have my entire music library on a portable device. Charges via USB-C which means it's easy to find a cable. Nice. Charges fast too. Sound quality is great using Earbuds, headphones and through my stereo speakers - except for the random pops and crackle noises between songs and when changing the volume. Probably fixable via firmware. Another pro: it plays every type of file I've tried. Obviously it's best to use HiRes FLAC but mp3 and mp4/AAC are also supported. Haven't found any music filetypes that aren't supported yet. Bluetooth works well however once you're in the player (vs step counter or whatever) it's tricky to get back to the Bluetooth settings menu to turn it on or pair a speaker. Summary: sound quality is great (can't compare to other players since I haven't tried any), battery life is too short, UI is frustrating.

This DAP is awesome!!
I’m in the process of digitizing/archiving my original press metal vinyl/CD collection. I was looking for a good DAP that was FLAC compatible. After a lot of research, I settled on this one. This player is amazing! The quality is impressive according to how much it cost. The outer case is aluminum, the DAC chip is a Sabre, the touch screen is responsive, the silicone case is a good throw in. I converted some of my harder to find pressed albums and wanted to test it on my main stereo system. I’m using a Monster 3.5mm to RCA into an stereo Onkyo receiver. It sounded amazing injunction with the Sabre chip. I was really impressed. It’s very easy to add music. Just hook the DAP to your computer and copy to the device it self, click the update songs, and boom it finds the music. Updating is also easy, go to the site download and copy to the device and hit update in the device options. I haven’t played with and EQing, FM radio and the step counter...those options I can live with out. I hope they make some more cases probably an Otterbox type case because once I’m finally finished I’m taking this in to my semi truck and the silicone case isn’t going to cut it. I definitely recommend this DAP over anything else in this price range. I definitely recommend this over an IPod due to the fact it can take high capacity micro SD cards, FLAC support and don’t need proprietary software. Right now I have a Samsung 128gb card and it’s running no issues.

Solid player with some usability drawbacks
There's a lot to like about this player. Really good sound with both the headphone output and bluetooth. Snappy navigation. Lots of configuration options to tweak. The primary drawback is that the touchscreen is a bit small for my blocky fingers. Moving adroitly is hit-and-miss, and some of the swipe behavior has a bit of a learning curve. Still, for the cost, it's an impressive device. With a larger form factor ( as little as .5 inch taller), and slightly improved UI, it would be a solid 5 stars. Edit: I've become more used to the UI and the way the various swipes and the like work. It's a really excellent sounding player, but best for fairly stationary pursuits, as it is easy to accidentally cause it to change volume or do some other task while it's in your pocket. One thing I've been impressed with is how much oomph the internal op-amp has. This little player can push Fostex T-60RP headphones solidly, with far more authority than any phone or tablet I've experienced. On the high gain setting, it is playing at good volume in the 65/100 range. Not *quite* enough to raise it to 5/5, but I'll say it's a solid 4.6.

Minor corrections to product description.
Maybe more later, but just a couple of clarifications to the product description. It seems like a great little player, volume is massive and not muted per EU Regs. It has no internal memory as most players do - you will need an SD card to store anything. The card slot is MICRO SD - not standard SD as listed. Also it shows the SD capacity as 512Gb - In fact my 1Tb card works perfectly well, so that is not a limitation. UPDATE After living with this for a few weeks, I'm more and more happy. Sound is fantastic, player is easy to use and reliable. One minor drawback is that the firmware might be better are organising your files - for example, I can select by genre and then by album title, but not by genre then artist. And sometimes the firmware will second-guess you on your own defined attributes - so James Brown is listed under the firmware's genre of Funk, not my genre of Soul. But these are minor quibbles for a unit of high quality and great value for the price.

Bang for bucks high quality portable audio player
Already had a hi def audio player. Just a wee upgrade. Great little bit of kit, battery last me a long time. Plenty of adjustability in sound/ tone of music through the many eq parameters. Comes already covered with front and rear screen protection. Nice touch with the silicone cover too. Sticking with the screen - good colour and clarity of album covers. small player but easy to navigate with my fingers , quite responsive too. Pedometer is of no use to me really. Pairing this player most of the time with wireless ear buds and can’t fault the connectivity at all. Top marks Hidizs
