This book features every smocking stitch, clearly explained for beginners, but also has inspiring examples and new or little-known techniques to appeal to experienced smockers. It shows how to work the stitches, read graphs, and select colours, fabric and threads. It teaches how to pleat and block a garment, gives advice on different techniques such as ribbon weaving, counterchange, template and freeform smocking and much more. It is bursting with hints, ideas and inspirational photographs. There is full advice on the fabric, needles and thread needed and a glossary of smocking terms. Interspersed throughout the book there are helpful hints for all the stitches and techniques, and beautiful photographs of smocked garments to inspire the reader to pick up a needle. Wonderful photographs and written descriptions of a dying art at a Great Price!
One of the best, if not the best books covering the art of smocking. If you have a question about how to do, or one of the stitches you have not done recently, this book gives beautiful detail in full color photographs with step by step written descriptions. A must for any serious smocker. This is the latest edition with a flexible cover with a great binding.

Excellent Tutorial/ odd presentation
Book arrived yesterday and I devoured it! Pros- Excellent photos, excellent descriptions, excellent tips, excellent “advanced” options. Cons- the order the stitches are presented is odd, especially for a novice. The very basic, first stitches Stem and Outline, aren’t presented until you’re almost at the end of the book. (The information is presented in Alphabetical Order rather than Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced stitches/techniques) If you are brand new to smocking, I’d consider this an excellent reference manual rather than a tutorial. It’s certainly not a “start on page 1 and stitch your way through to the end”

LOVED THIS BOOK!!
I have not smocked in YEARS, so this book was great with the colorful pictures and descriptions to help get me back to smocking again. It answered my questions on what type of needles to use and why, threads, etc. I felt much more confident in starting, and finishing my project, and I know I will continue to use it for more smocking ideas.

Great book!
Exactly as described and fast delivery. Love the book. After I figured out that this is a reference in alphabetical order rather than materials, techniques, then stitches and projects I found it easy to navigate and will be very useful as I complete my projects.

I love this book
I love this book. I already knew some of the basic smocking stitches from general embroidery books and the internet but this book has so much more. It has a huge variety of stitches and covers traditional smocking, back smocking, counterchange smocking and picture smocking and more. It has some embroidery stitches that can be used to embellish simple designs too. I also found the sections on creating a garment extremely useful. It has really clear instructions and photos making it really easy to follow. I would definitely recommend this book.
