In simple, powerful words and vibrant illustrations, Donald Crews evokes the rolling wheels of that childhood favorite: a train. This board book features sturdy pages and is just the right size for little hands. This Caldecott Honor Book features bright colors and bold shapes. Even a child not lucky enough to have counted freight cars will feel he or she has watched a freight train passing after reading Freight Train . Donald Crews used childhood memories of trains seen during his travels to his grandparents' farm in the American South as the inspiration for this timeless favorite. Red caboose at the back, orange tank car, green cattle car, purple box car, black tender and a black steam engine . . . freight train. Review: Childhood favourite - My son loved this as a child, and wanted it for his own son (two years old). He loves trains at the moment, and It has immediately become a favourite. He is also learning the colours. Simple and brilliant. Be aware that it is basically an American book, and the original has slightly different terminology. I bought that version by mistake at first. Review: In a class of its own - An every night read for my 2 year old! He simply loves this book, and trains. In combination with playing with his train sets he has learnt not only the colours, and more details of the trains, but concepts of under, over, through as well. Simple, yet effective.

A wonderfully designed book that can be enjoyed both by the youngest readers, and their parents.

Deceptively simple, yet thoroughly addictive
I bought this book because of its delightfully simple illustrations and concept: it covers only the bare necessities, leaving everything to the child's imagination. Whether for this reason, or that my 18m old son has just discovered trains, he is addicted to it, announcing "tret train" whenever he sees it, and clutching it tightly. Children of this age need simple concepts to ensure concentration and fascination, ensuring that they absorb knowledge and their imaginations develop. Despite the simplicity, each re-read brings in new concepts.

Nice little book
This is a fairly simple book - most pages have only a few words on them e.g. 'Green cattle truck, Blue coal truck' or 'Crossing bridges'. I was a bit disappointed when I got it as I thought it would be too simple for my just-turned three year old. However, he surprised me in terms of how much he enjoyed it and how often he asked me to read it. (By the way, don't expect them to learn anything about colour mixing from it though - the carriages are the colours of the rainbow and in the pictures where the train moves the colours blur into eachother - however my son has shown absolutely no interest in this aspect!)

Great book for a one-year-old
Beautiful book, my daughters liked it. Very few words, it's mostly just lovely pictures of a train. Very simple and colorful. A one-year-old can "read" it to themselves. (Also nice to chew on in board book form)
