The good thing about these filters are almost no maintenance. If you do decide to use a power head, choose carefully. Some power heads may be to disruptive to the fish. If you decide to get smaller fish I personally would not use a power head. Stronger fish can swim against the current that a power head can produce. I hope this helps more than confuse. Oh, and one more thing...this may be a no-brainer...gravel designed for aquariums. **Q: can this be used alone for my 29 gallon tank? i don’t like the noise of a hang over filter and i can’t use an internal filter bc of the flow strength** A: Yes, I have a 29 gallon tank and this is the only filter I use. The water is sparkling clean, really like this. **Q: My aquarium dimensions are 35” x 17”. Wich model is recommended?** A: Doesn't look like they make one specifically for that size aquarium base. However, you may be able to purchase two units (packages) of the 20L/29 gal. size or the15/20H gal. size and snap the plates together. You may end-up with an extra plate when you're finished, but that's no big deal. Look at the sizes of each of these and figure out which combination would best cover the bottom of your tank. Good luck. **Q: On my 29 gal bowfront, This filter is just a tad too wide at the front (left & right). Is it possible to trim the 2 corners and still work properly?** A: The filter tubes can be cut down, so they fit properly. If you plan on trimming it because it is too wide, I suggest trimming only the front corners. I would make a template by setting the aquarium on top of the plate, so you get a good idea of how much to cut or trim off. Be sure to sand the ruff edges Please note I also use graven for mine which does cover the plate before I add my water. It will still work fine as a bit of gravel gets down around the edges anyway!
