Duse the job

The only bad thing I would say is if your not technically minded it's setup is a little fiddly that's ethernet side of setup, WiFi is a little better and USB is the easiest option. The nas works well and useful for backup of phone and files can recommend this if your just looking to backup you phone, laptop, Computer.

A Great Value NAS for the Home

Edit:Just over 1-year since purchase and it's dedder. Dreaded clicking HD. All that data copied laboriously across for safe keeping - gone. Now out of warranty. Didn't even actually use beyond the initial backup process copying data to it. Thankfully I still have the many old HDDs the data was originally on, and on checking they still seem readable. Waste of time and money. End of story.Original review:The drive comes very well packed in a quality outer box and protected by foam. A good job as Amazon used no packaging at all, merely sticking my address label on the retail box. In future I will remember to select the Amazon Packaging option, which is free and gives a little more protection. There is a separate inner box containing the power-supply, a network cable and a USB3 lead.To set-up I downloaded the SSKCloud app to my smartphone, opened it … and waited. It took some time before the drive was fully booted-up and recognised, a minute or so, so the initial warning of no drive available was only temporary. Once connected you are prompted to change the default User ID and Password (which are printed in the User Manual in case you ever reset the NAS) and create your own. With this done you have access to all the settings and options available on the NAS, including a simple File manager. My first task was to transfer the contents of all my external USB drives onto the NAS. To do this I just plugged each one into the USB Host port and used the app to Select and Copy the folders I needed. This almost went to plan but there seems to be a limit on either the total file-size or number of files that can be transferred in one go. At around 250gb the process stopped. However to continue I just selected the remaining folders of files and started the process again using the app. This full backup took some time, obviously, but with USB3 transfer speeds wasn’t any slower than expected. Neither the NAS nor its power-supply got beyond even gently warm during the whole process. There is bespoke software available for your PC or Mac to view the files on the NAS, or you can use the industry standard Samba protocol to access the files more directly. Instructions are given clearly in the PDF User Manual on how to set this up.Being a network drive there is obviously the option to access your files remotely and there’s a unique UID in the phone app which is needed to find the drive over the Internet. Then just enter your password and you can view your files. As for any problems? Well the phone app seems a little buggy, causing a few missed file transfers on occasion (remember the file-size issue above), and because I was using a Mac desktop to access the drive via Samba, there seemed to be a few log-in issues (the macOS version of Samba is known to be tricky). A reboot of my computer sorted this. Connecting to external drives generally worked very well but one of my drive caddies refused to play ball. To remedy this I had to take the hard-disk out of the caddy and put it in another that had worked previously. Everything then copied across fine. I had no problems with simpler USB memory-sticks.Overall this NAS is of very good quality, well made, very quiet in use and looks great - modern or futuristic even. The price considering it has a 4TB hard-drive inside, is absolutely excellent.Clearly it is not intended for professionals but I found it easy to use, reliable and not one of those huge black bricks most NAS enclosures seem to be. I was able to view photos and watch videos from afar, as well as keep various documents to hand wherever I was.All-in-all I’m very pleasantly surprised by how well this set-up has worked. Happy to buy SSK again in future.

Nice hardware, easy to set up - Baffling to use

I had in mind different uses but mainly, I expected something that was my hardware external drive at home but able keep track of my travels, photos and documents from my phone, laptop etc. while away from home and connected to the internet by WiFi. Although it is connected and 'working' (i.e. I can see it from my laptop and iPhone) I find nowhere instructions on how to actually use it for any of these possible uses:1) The entire laptop C:Drive COPIED – so it looks like a direct copy of my C:Drive) up to the SSK Cloud. And for this to be updated and synchronised every time I connect toa) My own network, wired or wirelesslyb) To a Wifi network away from home (so when travelling – abroad especially – photographs and other documents are uploaded and synchronised to the SSK Cloud.2) How to select specific folders (or files) and copy those to the SSK Cloud Once.a. Then occasionally update that folder wherever I am. As if using the SSKC as an external disk drive.3) How to store a typical encrypted backup on the SSKC4) How to backup my iPhone photographs as and when I am connected to the internet.I'm now in touch with SSK But after 3+ weeks I am no closer to finding out how to do any of the above.I will come back and change my review if I can get it sorted out - but t the moment it's just losing me a lot of time.If anyone can assist with some step by step instructions (Or point me to a useful User manual - not the supplied connection instructions) I will be very grateful! Thanks! email me at zebraman@cix.co.uk
