Medium chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) is a disorder in which the body is not able to correctly convert fats into energy. Children with this disorder are encouraged to: 1.) Eat regularly 2.) Wear a medical alert bracelet. 3.) Stay well hydrated. Throughout this book you will notice zebra stripes in each illustration. In medicine an unlikely diagnosis is termed a “zebra”. This comes from a saying used when teaching medical students about how to think logically in regards to possible diagnoses. “When you hear hoofbeat, think horses, not zebras”. The term was coined in the late 1940’s by Dr. Theodore Woodward, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In the world of rare, inherited metabolic disorders, such as MCADD, physicians are trained to look for the “zebras”, so the term changes to “When you hear hoofbeats, think zebras”. We hope you enjoy this story about Max, Minnie and Mo and their journey across the jungle! Review: Sweet book to explain MCADD to kids and adults! - When we found out our son has MCADD we didn’t know how to explain it to him or anyone for that matter! This has been great to send with him to preschool for his teachers at the beginning of the year to and I know it will be good to explain it to him when he gets older (he’s only 3 now). Review: Must have book for young kids with MCAD! - This book is a must-have for any MCAD family with young children! The story line is simple and understandable - eat often so you have enough energy - and the pictures of Max and his friends are very cute. Our 3 and 5 year olds really like this book and I like that it's about everyday life with MCAD and not all the crummy hospital/doctor stuff. Wish it had been available when they were 1 and 3!!!

We love this book
We love this book! We got it to help us explain our oldest son's MCADD to our younger children. The story of Max and his friends is told in a very cute rhyme that was easy for my young ones to understand. As a bonus, there were some fun activities at the end, as well as recipes to try (my 5 year old is eager to try the "monkey cookies!"). Overall, so thoughtfully done, and it facilitated some great conversations in our house to help us explain MCADD. Very happy that a resource like this exists. Thanks to the authors!

Good for MCADD families
It doesn't have the polish that a professionally written book would have but MCADD is a rare condition and books on it are even more rare. For people not impacted by MCADD this book isn't likely to be of interest. It's a nice little story with some activities at the back. Our daughter is maybe a little young for some of it right now but as she grows up I imagine she will enjoy it. The book doesn't go into much detail around the actual science of the condition. Although after trying to explain the condition to some members of family and them not getting it somehow reading this book made it click so it was worth having it for that. I believe the book was written and published in the USA. It was also printed a number of years back so we did pay quite a high price to get the book here in the UK. Unfortunately it looked like during shipping the book got folded so there was a crease on the front cover. Disappointing after paying so much for it.
