Great chick starter!
I’ve been using Scratch and Peck’s starter mash for about a month now, and It has truly been a life saver! I previously purchased other chick starter feed and sadly loss chicks from vitamin deficiency and others were not in great shape I switched to this feed and they all bounced back! What I like: ✅ Feed Quality: truly has everything a baby chick needs to survive and be healthy. I especially love that it is organic, non GMO, and is corn/ soy free! Chicks love it! ✅ Packaging: It arrived well-packaged, no damage and the bag is resealable. The only thing I would change but is easily added separately would be bugs. Chicks/ chickens do consume a large amount of insects and chicks specifically need high protein. I wish there was ground cricket or something added. I know a lot of people say it’s a “treat” but outside they will eat all the bugs they find. Use case: I feed dry but hear it is a really good product to ferment, and so far, no issues with performance or quality. I will use this product for future chicks. I’ll update this review if anything changes over time, but for now – I definitely recommend it if you need a reliable chick starter.

Better than Manna Pro on every account
This stuff is great. Granted I'm only a couple days into it, but so far so good. I had intended on getting the chick starter locally. Then ran down the clock trying to find organic chick starter in LA... Because I have Prime I ordered Manna Pro Organic Chick Starter which is roughly $20 for 5 pounds and guaranteed to arrive within two days. It seem like a pricey but safe bet to be sure I'd have it when the little ones arrived. I'm new to this, I didn't know what to compare it to, seemed fine enough. The first ingredients were corn and soy, which I wasn't wild about, both for health and for environmental reasons. But the chicks ate it, they look healthy, good enough. Come time to order more food and I try the starter from Scratch and Peck. It arrived in four days. Which was awesome and unexpected. These little ladies get a pretty diverse snack diet and plenty of time outside in the hot California sun. I wouldn't say they are picky, but I would say they aren't suckers, they've tasted all sorts of stuff and they've shown their individual preferences even now at just under 4 weeks. They all went nuts on it. Bonanza style. Chicken party. Because they were so into it, I got curious and compared. Visually the Manna Pro looks like tiny torn up pieces of flimsy cardboard, left to bleach in the sun for a week. Scratch and Peck looks more like a packet of soup spices mixed with ground up Muesli. There looked to be a few pieces still too big for them, but when poking around their bedding later I didn't see any left; perhaps they became accustom. The Manna Pro didn't smell like much of anything, while this stuff smelled like foodstuffs – dry grass and a TINY hint of cooked fish. Then I looked for packing dates. When the Manna Pro shipped it was already nearly 3 months old. When the Scratch and Peck shipped it was a few days old. Even if the chicks liked it the same, if it cost just as much; that alone would cause me to only buy this ever again. Wait two extra days for it to arrive and get food that's three months fresher, seems like a fair deal. Okay, now packaging. Manna Pro, plastic ziplock back. Convenient but wasteful. Scratch and Peck, sturdy paper packaging filled to the brim, densely pressed, with ingredient list and product name sewed along one of the seams. If that kind of thing matters to you as well, you'll feel better about getting this. I put the feed into large mason jars for storage. Finally, cost. Manna Pro cardboard crumble = $4 per pound. Scratch and Peck tasty looking chick Muesli $1.60 per pound

chicks LOVE it at first sight!
I am an experienced gardener/homesteader, but this is my first foray into chickens. I decided to start with baby chicks, and living rurally my choices for non-medicated all natural chick feed was slim to none... the local feed store didn't believe anything like it existed, although I knew it did. I had to explain myself, "I'm not a wacked out liberal nazi organic crazy person, just want natural stuff for me and my animals" - he even thought I was crazier than earlier ;> After doing extensive research on the internet to find what I wanted/didn't want ingredient wise I headed over to gold ole' amazon.com to check prices. found scratch and peck and the rest is history. the stuff is great, has ground as well as whole grain. the chicks took to it right away and LOVE it. After several weeks I just can't explain how great this stuff is for them - they are growing well and just love it. I would recommend anyone getting it also get the chick starter pack so you can start them on baby chick grit and DE at the same time - from day 3 they'll know what to do with the stuff and you'll have the most healthy chicks ever. Even thought the shipping is more than I would like to pay, getting my chick health started right is worth it. they will go out to 100% free range in a few months, but they need to get started on good stuff from day one. so I am here reordering this stuff as they are starting to really eat a TON as they get much bigger and one bag lasted me about 3 weeks with 28 chicks. GREAT product, I will get it again the next batch as well.

Chicks Loved It
Bought the Layer Mash the 3rd time and quality wasn’t as good. There were “earthy rubbish” which looked like twigs and were quite sharp. I had to be careful and tried to take the twigs out. A little hesitant to try again. It was also more powdery than the starter and grower varieties. I was delighted to see how delighted the chicks including their mother enjoyed this scratch feed. Bought them other chick starter before and they’d just ignore it. This is quality feed without as much powdery breakdown that other chick starters contain. I’m eager to see what happens tomorrow. Since they all ate without hesitation for the first feeding, this product got my five stars. I only wish the cost wasn’t expensive for my budget.

Great Starter Mash!
Our chicks and ducklings appear to love uh the starter and in comparison to a friend using a different feed she lost over half her fowl and we have lost none. I like to think it’s due to the quality feed we are giving them. Our chick even started life with wry neck and with this starter and the electrolytes he was completely better in 12 hrs.

Bulk is better but they didn’t have the will to do so!
(New Updated Review) I reached out to the seller to see if they were willing to discount for bulk sale. The answer was professional but seemed like Bs😅 they put there price accountability off to Amazon. As if the price is set by them. Possibly true, but doesn’t make sense! It’s your product, your business and your profit margins. So needless to say they lost business. I found another dealer that sells 2000lbs totes of organic feed and I’m saving just short of$2000! If I was to order 2000lbs in the portions of scratch & pecks 50lb bags. Also that savings from the new company is with there $300 delivery fee😅 that shows why bulk is so much better in life. I hate being a consumer that’s portioned to (drug term) nickel and dimming. I look for source! Who would’ve thought that the old street “criminal” life would have its perks in the righteous way of living! They not about to profit off me so much that I’m paying more in the long run than the damn supplier😭😅😂 picture below will show the size of the new companies bag. So worth it and the smell is way more potent in freshness (Original review) Good feed but will become expensive if you got quite a bit of birds. I run through 50lbs rather quick shorter than a month’s time. Hopefully they can come up with bulk pricing to save more on the big end. But might switch over to mixing my own feed if not. Spent about $216 from August 21-September1. Now that they are getting bigger of course there eating quicker.
