Is the cover removable to wash...zippered?

No it does not. That's why I purchased a mattress cover for it.

How soft is the mattress?

I love my mattress very soft but not too soft. I would recommend this product. Actually I'm about to order another one for my daughter who is going off to college soon.

Is it good for someone who has back problems?

What I received was definitely not good for back problems. I have back problems. It was lumpy and extremely hard so my spine didn't align. I was in a lot of pain. I was told I might have received a faulty item, so I am not sure if that is the case for everyone.
