โ In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines the smallest one was Madeline . โ Nothing frightens Madelineโnot tigers, not even mice. With its endearing, courageous heroine, cheerful humor, and wonderful, whimsical drawings of Paris, the Madeline stories are true classics that continue to charm readers, even after 75 years. Join Madeline in another adventure when she and Pepito run off to join the carnival with a band of traveling gypsies! Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962) was the author of the beloved Madeline books, including Madeline , a Caldecott Honor Book, and Madeline's Rescue , winner of the Caldecott Medal. Review: Funky story - 4 year old loves the fantastical story and pictures. She doesnโt really understand when they get hidden in a lionโs skin and weird long gypsy travels, but somehow it mesmerizes her imagination without weirding her out or scaring her. Just nice to read a different book that doesnโt try to push a lesson or agenda. No need to explain, just imaginative. She also likes how she notices each of the original books contain the same poetry lines. Review: wonderful book - I read this from the library when I was very small.... I think it gave me my love for fine arts. I HIGHLY recommend this book for young people, it's a lovely introduction to some of the great artists of France. VERY beautiful art. A classic.

Rich in stereotypes from a previous era
These books come from an unsanitised age. The gypsies kidnap Madeline and Pepito, drug them and then hold them prisoners. I can handle them kidnapping Pepito as he is a misunderstood bulimic sadist. In any case, they get to work as circus performers and live life alternatively. So the story is great should you relish the alternative meme and love the awesome stereotyping of our traveller friends. I love the illustrations but the fun is providing new text or alternatively ploughing through it in unbowdlerised form- watch your kids ask why!

This series has some dark plots...
Interesting story. Madeline gets left behind at a Carnival, and the gypsies sow her into a lion costume to hide her from the orphanage so they can keep her.
