Well made sturdy flat bench for the money.
So the 17,000 current reviews are for 2 different flat benches. After looking at the reviews there seems to be some failures in the weld of the less expensive bench but not in the more heavy duty version. The one I bought and this review is the more robust bench costing a few dollars more. The bench is solid, and does not move once put together and all bolts are tight. The bench is very well made, with nicely supplied hardware that was easy to put together. They supply 2 allen wrenches, but you will also need an adjustable wrench or a socket which works better for fastening the carriage bolts. The padding and stiching looks well made but time will tell, but for the money this seems to be a bargain.

A Centerpiece for Your Workouts!
Product Name or Manufacturer: MARCY Product Description: Flat Utility Bench Key Features: High Functioning Workout Tool; Heavy Duty Construction; 600-pound Capacity; Space Saving Design; Powder Coated Finish; Perfect for Home Use. Product as Arrived: New in box; Assembly required; Wrench required; All pieces accounted for; Instructions for assembly included. Positive Attributes: Easy to assemble; Easy to Use and Store; Rugged, quality material; Sturdy yet comfortable bench; Red Stitching is a cosmetic plus. Negative Attributes: Not used enough… Overall Impression: I purchased this item for my wife to use in her home office. I was looking for something simple and convenient that would be easy for her to use. This bench was exactly what I was looking for. It was easy to assemble with the use of an adjustable wrench (not included). Once everything was put together, it looked so nice that I wanted to keep it for myself. The bench is very sturdy, no wobble whatsoever. A bench is a very versatile piece of equipment, that could be used in every workout and an invaluable tool for exercise and fitness goals. * = Product does NOT function correctly! Product needs to be replaced or returned immediately! Definitely do not recommend this product! ** = Product functions correctly, but lack positive attributes. First impression: great for $40
I was a little reluctant based on a few negative reviews, but I thought it was worth giving this a shot for $40. I almost bought the Reebok bench for about twice the price, but decided to roll the dice. I think it will suit my purposes just fine. Assembly: Instructions weren't much (basically two diagrams of all the extruded parts), but there are basically only 4 parts you have to put together... the two feet, the main frame, and the top of the bench. I'd say I got it together in about 15 minutes and I'm not especially handy. This is a $40 bench, so I'm guessing the negative reviews are quality control issues, which is not too shocking for something at this price point. All the holes lined up for me and it went together pretty easy. The design for the foot attachments could have been a little easier (tight fit for the wrench). This is not a heavy duty bench. The first time you pick it up, you'll feel it's crazy light compared to a bench you'd find at a gym. That said, it should be fine for my uses... basically some ab work, work with light dumbbells, split squats, etc. On the positive side of that, the fact that it's light will make it very easy to move out of the way when not in use, but obviously that means it's not as sturdy if you're trying to throw around a bunch of weight on it. I'm rating it as 5 because it's just what I need -- if I bought it planning to use this in a heavy-weight set up, I might rate it lower. ------- EDIT: One other comment regarding some other reviews: I did notice this is slightly wobbly when I have it directly on my basement floor. I think this is actually due to my basement floor not being level rather than a problem with the bench. I usually have it over a rug and it feels solid there. If it's a bit wobbly directly on a hard surface (concrete, hardwood, laminate), I recommend putting it on a rug or those usual gym squares. I think that would resolve it... I should probably break out a level and see if it's really the floor or the bench that isn't quite level, but keeping it on the rug is working fine for me.

This bench was one of the best "product per dollar" values I have purchased
This is a short review of the Marcy Utility Flat Bench. I was not compensated by anyone in any way for this review. This bench was one of the best "product per dollar" values I have purchased. Assembly was intuitive and super simple. There are 4 carriage bolts with washers and nuts. There are 4 machine screws with washers. There are two flat plates that the carriage bolts pass through. A provided hex (Allen) wrench is used for the machine screws. The carriage bolt nuts require an adjustable (Crescent) wrench or even better, a 5/8" or 16mm box-end, open-end, or socket wrench (not included). The nuts for the carriage bolts are "locking" nuts that utilize nylon inserts to "lock" the nut in place. I think some previous reviewers may have been unfamiliar with this type of nut and erroneously concluded that the bolts were too long and/or the nuts "stopped" before seating securely. The instructions suggest using two or more people for assembly. This is probably a generic instruction from some of Marcy"s larger and heavier products combined with CYA verbiage from their legal department. The total weight of the assembled bench is only 18 pounds and I didn't find any part of the assembly heavy enough or awkward enough to require assistance. It took me about 20 minutes to unpack, read instructions, and complete assembly. The assembled bench is very solid and stable. The padding is firm but very comfortable. The length and width are perfect for me (6 feet tall) to lay on my back and do dumbbell flys and dumbbell presses. I also use it for seated dumbbell curls. When I'm finished, it is light enough and small enough to easily move and store. For my stated uses of the bench, I don't think there is a better value available. I'm really pleased with it! Cheers, Bozko

Perfect, But A Ratchet Is Helpful
It came in perfect shape. There weren’t many pieces to put together. However, we did find that we had to use a ratchet wrench to get a really tight closure on the nuts. The instructions were more complicated looking than needed. I would definitely buy this again.

Very solid
(For latest update, see update below) I thought I would take a chance on this bench since it was so cheap, and I couldn't be more satisfied. It was packed well and went together in about 5 minutes. It is a testament to the effectiveness of this bench that even during the assembly stage I could already feel substantial gains in my lats. A quick mirror check confirmed this to be true. All the parts were there, and an Allen wrench was included. Just make sure you have a regular wrench for some of the bolts and some bourbon for overall health and well being. I hopped on for a few quick reps to test it out and found that it was incredibly solid - absolutely no wobble at all. My other FID bench has a tiny bit of wiggle that is a constant bother. With the indicated 600lb limit, this should be fine for heavy lifting for just about anybody. Unfortunately my compression socks were at the dry cleaners or I would have tested that limit. Maybe next time I'll update on the max capabilities. Finally, the padding was nice and thick and firm. I couldn't feel any bolts underneath, and it gave nice support - not too spongy. One thing I noticed was that the user limit was 300lb, but the max limit was 600lb. I don't know how the bench knows if you're a 400lb guy lifting 200 or a 200lb guy lifting 400, but you probably wouldn't want to get those two hypothetical scenarios mixed up. If you're 305 and want to a bit of iron hoisting, I would suggest doing a bit of cardio and maybe some sauna first to hit that 300lb limit. (Update: 09/30/2015) I see that some people have been having issues with the durability and/or stability of their units. Maybe some others have purchased lemons, but mine is still rock solid over a year later - no wobbles, no weld failures, and no problems with the stitching. The padding is also still very firm. This is with consistent 3-4x per week of use, unless it is holiday season where usage drops precipitously in honor of the festive spirits - both beer and bourbon. I still have yet to test that upper weight limit, but I'm getting the kangaroo leather inserts redone on my weightlifting gloves. Once those bad boys are back from the tailor and they are properly oiled and conditioned, I'll be ready to max out and give it a go.

Decent Product
I have been reading mixed reviews on this product so I wanted to share my opinion. I received the bench today and it came perfectly intact with all the components and hardware necessary for assembly. It is not super high quality because it was only $99.00, however it is great value for the money. It is sturdy, decent looking, and does the job. I am happy with this purchase. I would not recommend it for a larger person or someone who wants to lift heavy weights, but if you are looking for an addition to your home gym, and are an average sized woman or man, you won't be disappointed with this bench.
