If you watch the short animated films that go with this movie and learn more of the backstory, you will see that they did a great job of building a fictional history for the antagonists/protagonists and the characters were given meaning and histories. This isn't an extravagant Peter Jackson LOtR or Hobbit trilogy-type epic and it isn't pretending to be. Nor is this a hack & slash romp like Van Helsing but instead is a well crafted, well acted and very entertaining movie if you have what so many critics seem to be lacking these days...an imagination. The costumes and sets were perfect for the film and the interaction between the main characters (other than a somewhat weak performance by Elijah Wood) were very entertaining to watch. And yes, I grew up in the 70's and early 80's playing D&D so I can see where Vin Diesel is coming from with his character.
