Native 5 Knife with 2.95" CPM SPY27 High-Performance Steel Blade and Cobalt-Blue Lightweight FRN Handle - PlainEdge - C41PCBL5

It's unfortunate, but it's a fact; if you want to read about the new breed of belt and pocket carry knives, you have to learn some words that no one has ever heard before. The choil, for instance - the thick part at the base of the knife blade, where it fits to the hinge. Not sharp, it's a load-bearing part of the knife. The Native5 design has little nubbins - "jimping" - both on the top, where your thumb can rest; and also below, where along with the hinge area the choil forms a curved, jimped area where your index fingertip or first knuckle can rest. Gripped this way, the knife offers great control and a great feel - it's fun to hold and use this knife. And I learned a few new words to bore my friends with! I hadn't carried a knife for 20 years or so; Dad's old made-in-USA Buck Stockman still serves but I wanted to see what else was out there. And it turns out that, like everything else, the technology has advanced substantially. Single-hand open, for example, used to be a novelty that might get your knife banned or taken away by a lawman; since 2009, though, that's been a non-issue for assisted-open (non-springloaded) knives like the Native. You put your thumb in the round hole; you apply slight pressure; the knife swivels open like greased lightning and 'snicks' into place with the firmest, lowest-tolerance, no-rattle lock I could imagine in a knife. Single hand closure is also possible - press the spring loaded spine into the handle detent and press the lightly-swaged back of the blade against your jeans - it pops loose and swivels closed fast and sure. And I do recommend single-hand operation, because this knife's spear point is menacing. Like Sauron's gaze, it "pierces cloud, shadow, earth and flesh." It's poked holes in several shirts - after the point gets through, the ultrasharp edge cuts thread - and when I've tried double-hand closure, I've often gotten a painful stab wound for my trouble. I thought OK, I'll just dull the point by scraping some grit out of a groove in a steel can lid - no dice. The lid was sliced; the edge was left intact. See, there's this new steel technology. I don't understand it but it has to do with metal powder and weird alloys and the name is CPM35VN. It's chrome-moly, like my old bike, but also vanadium - like my dad's 1947 journeyman carpentry hammer, tough yet resilient - and niobium, which is a fairly rare transition metal. I have been trying to dull this blade for the month I've owned it and no dice. I can't dull it; I can't chip it or roll it or make it any less efficient for cutting. I'm not using it to cut nails or do things to intentionally break it; but in daily use it just hasn't changed a bit. Its surly gray-iridescent gleam seems to challenge me. Try me on something, it says. See whether I cut it or not. Amazing when you have a knife clipped into your pocket how you find things to do with it. I've been keeping this in my Levi's 501 'fifth pocket' where it's a perfect fit. I changed the clip to suit my preference - using a Torx you can move the clip to any of 4 orientations. The clip is a little tight but I guess I could bend it to lessen that; I haven't bothered. Anyway, now that the knife is always close to hand, I use it about 2-3 times an hour. It's always nice to have it and there's always that little moment of surprise when it cuts cleanly and quickly and that annoying task that was going to take a moment is now completely solved. If you haven't guessed, I love this thing. I love the G-10 nubbly rubberized grip, I love the practical shape and length of the blade, I love the silly Spyderco makers' marks, and if someone took this knife away from me - doubtful, it'd make a great personal defense weapon - but if they did I'd have to go get another one immediately!

I own around 10 knives (mostly Spyderco) and this is tied at top of my list for solid-build-quality. Tied with the Manix 2 XL. Great knife. A smaller stout knife but feels great in the hand. Holds an edge well with its s35vn steel. This however was a bit disappointing when it first arrived because it felt gritty and uneasy while opening and closing. I took the knife apart and stropped the bushings and even put a touch of grease on them too. This made a difference but it was not dramatic and it took around 8-12 months of opening-and-closing the knife before it broke it. Now it feels great. Love the fit and finish. You will enjoy!

I just got this knife and I can say that I am very well pleased with it. I have all kinds of knives, but this one will be my new every day use/carry knife. It feels very solid all around and locks securely in place when open; I wouldn't think that this locking mechanism would ever fail on a person. The size is perfect for me because I didn't want a knife that was too big or too small. It rides comfortably clipped in my pocket or I will sometimes possibly carry it in my maxpedition single sheath, which houses the knife perfectly. This isn't one of those over sized, overkill type knives, rather it is just the perfect size (about an inch and a half shorter than a sharpie marker when closed and about an inch and a half longer than a sharpie marker when open). I have the spyderco dragonfly vg-10 also, so this isn't my first spyderco. I am very satisfied with spyderco products and I would recommend them to anyone. I think this knife is of very high quality and I think that the $125.00 spent on this knife is a great bargain. If you have any hesitations about buying it, just do it, I don't think that you will be disappointed. Also, the knife is much lighter than I expected; I don't feel the weight of it when I have it in my pocket.

This is a very nice knife. It is light, came very sharp and is tight. This is not a flipper, so if you care about flipping open quickly this is not your knife.

Very well made piece by Spyderco. Blade is sharp AF, and slices paper easily out of the box. I will update review in several weeks/months when I sharpen the SPY steel for the first time. Most reports it sharpens easily and has strong edge retention. We will see. The handles are a love them or leave them kind of thing, but I love the FRN grippiness and overall texture. For me, everything about a knife has to click with my brain. How it feels in the hand. The texture of the handle. The action of it opening and closing, i.e. can I use it as a fidget spinner. This knife checks all those boxes at a reasonable price. Tolerances on the construction and action are highly refined. I always enjoy a well made stainless steel carry clip. The Native 5 is lighter than my Civivi Elementum, despite having a larger overall carry profile. SPY27 is supposed to be corrosion resistant, so I can see this being a good knife in potentially wet environments. Probably enough knife if you are the 3rd mate on a tugboat in Puget Sound, but not enough knife for a full scale survival situation, if that makes sense. Fidget spinner approved!!

Das Native5 kam heute, nur 4 Tage nach der Bestellung, mit Fedex International Priority bei mir an. Auspacken, Reinigen im USB, und erst mal staunen. Sehr Sauber verarbeitet, liegt Klasse in der Hand, aus der Box schon so scharf dass man sich die Haare damit rasieren kann. Kein Klingenspiel, die Klinge rastet sauber ein und steht mittig. Auch wenn das Native5 mit G10 net grad billig ist, ganz klare Kaufempfehlung für jeden, der ein stabiles und Verlässliches EDC-Messer sucht.

Quien compre esta navaja debe tener en cuenta que la fotografía y la información que muestra Amazon. mx. es totalmente incorrecta, ya que se refiere a otro modelo de la Native 5, el que tiene láminas de acero adentro del G-10 y está fabricado en acero CPM S35V. La versión que yo recibí es la ligera (lightweight), es decir, que no tiene el acero dentro de las cachas y está fabricada en acero CPM S30V. Más allá de la mala información, el producto es excelente y por eso puse cinco estrellas.

es muy recia corta como un demonio aguanta el filo muy bien no abre ni cierra tan rapido como otros modelos no sale la hoja disparada ni mucho menos pero se ve contundente
