What ended up determining how finicky the xbox was to respond was the console and its placement. The way my entertainment center was set up, the xbox one was more difficult to hit the sweet spot than the Xbox Series X I got later. You can also get IR repeaters that you have a receiver you can stick somewhere on your entertainment center that is easily accessible to where you point your remote, and a transmitter that you stick on the xbox's IR port, that way you won't have any problems getting the xbox to respond if it's inside a cabinet or otherwise hard to hit the console's IR sweet spot.
