does the camera work abroad ?

I believe the question is more a question of the internet access you have abroad. I the camera is connected to your Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi is connected to the internet, it should be accessible from anywhere.

Do you need to subscribe to the ss monitoring in order to access the ss camera for a live feed to the ss app?

I think you can view live even if you don't subscribe, but you will not get motion alerts or nor can you look at captured video when the motion alert happens. We pay for the subscription and it seems to work good, but one complaint is that there is no way to set off alarm via the phone app, so if you get notified of a motion event, and you want to set off alarm, you have to actually call Simply Safe to do it... Not good....
