If the power supply is plugged in, the light is on. It is not automatic in anyway. It doesn't even turn itself off when the sun comes up. What you want is possible but it is not an included function. Theoretically, you could have a solar panel charge a 12-volt battery and power the illuminator directly from the battery without the supplied power supply. You would need a battery that could power the illuminator during dark hours with enough reserve capacity to handle cloudy days. You could likely get away with a 12-volt, 22ah gel cell battery, a100-watt, 12-volt solar panel and a 10 amp solar charge controller. The 100-watt solar panel would provide enough power to power the illuminator during daylight and simultaneously charge the battery. Note that although the unit is supplied with a 3-amp power supply, the illuminator likely uses less than 2 amps. Hope this helps.
