KNIPEX Tools 13 71 8 Forged Wire Stripper, 8-Inch

I don’t often write reviews. I always want to, but I figure someone else probably said what I was going to say or I get busy and forget. These earned a mention, though. I have linesman pliers. Klein and knipex. You’ll get great linesman from either. The thing is, I still don’t know what they’re for. They twist wire great, but don’t strip it. They cut some cables, but often struggle with Larger multi conductor cables. After 10-3 it’s a lot of effort to cut/fit cable in there. They’re good for light hammering (be honest), and cutting smaller cables. That’s really it. There’s a reason hybrid pliers have exploded in the last 5 years. South Wire offers a plier that cuts better than any linesman, strip’s Romex sheath and strips 14 and 12. Klein has fantastic hybrids, especially that grey and black linesman hybrid. Not to mention a few 18-10 hybrids. Milwaukee and ideal have new offerings as well. It’s not the 1940s and original linesman just doesn’t solve all the problems these new offerings do. 9-10” heavy duty dykes for all your staple pulling, heavy cable/conductor cutting (even if it’s a few nips to get through, zip tie, knockout hammer, etc. Hybrid pliers Screw drivers Razor That will solve everything thrown at you. Why I like these hybrids? Good enough stripper selection. 18-10 and super sharp. Cuts romex and feeder conductors easier than any linesman. Slim and light. The nose is wide for twisting. but slim to get in tough areas. There’s a groove midway in the knurled twisting face that makes the perfect loop for devices. After you strip, keep them slightly closed, push the conductor in that groove and it’s the perfect width for 14 and 12 loops. The protruded guide between the 14 and 12 gauge stripper holes make the muscle memory lightning fast. The slim designs makes setting and getting your stripped length fast and effortless. The spring assist is not in the way, visible, or foul-able. The thumb lock breaks in perfect. The real hidden surprise though, is the 6-32 and 8-32 screw cutter. You don’t thread the screws in or out. No more getting your flat or Philips or impact out to thread it all the way in and back out. Just stick it through, cut, you’re done. This Makes devicing so much faster and easier. I don’t know how it gets it done without the need to clean/rethread by the old process of manually unscrewing, but it works flawlessly. Imagine blank plating in seconds not minutes. drawbacks: not appropriate as a light hammer for notching wood with a flat head, or for enclosure knockouts. too light and fit-dependent to use in that fashion. The shear/cutting area is a few inches away from the start of the tool. You have to open them wider and guide the tool or cable to the cutting surface; more than on dykes or linesman. If I was roughing, I’d use the Klein hybrid linesman. If you’re finishing, these can’t be beat.

The Knipex 13 71 8 is pretty much the best all-in-one wire stripper you can get. I'm sure there are plenty of reviews that go in depth about the features, so I won't do that here. I just wanted to add my two cents about a couple of other things. I wasn't completely happy with this right out of the box, so I ended up making a couple modifications. First off, the jaws don't shut all the way, and the locking mechanism was too loose, so it actuates at undesirable times. I decided I would attempt to remove the spring and the lock and did so successfully. What I used was a T25 bit, a driver, a nail punch, and a hammer. First use the T25 and remove the pivot screw. It can be difficult to break loose, because it's set in place with some kind of locking glue. Once the screw is removed you will see a small spring that you can just take right out. To remove the lock, take your nail punch and put it in the hole on the back side of the lock. hammer out the pin and the lock will just fall right out. To put it back together just tighten down the pivot screw again and back it out about .25mm (ever so slightly). If you tighten it too hard the handles won't open. If you feel the need, you can add some Loctite for peace of mind. I much prefer them this way and I will probably be adding some electrical tape to the handles just for a little better grip. The only other thing I would like to add is that I highly recommend the Knipex 13 88 8 Electrical Installation Pliers. They have some small improvements that I prefer over this pair. First of all, they are insulated. Second, they have an almost needle nose tip with a smooth section to prevent damaging copper wire while looping. Third, they have a traditional plier opening that can be used for grabbing nuts, with a small section behind it for crimping. Lastly, the cross-cut section is longer and a better overall shape. The only downside is that they only strip 12 & 14 AWG However, it never hurts to have both on hand as I do.

Still better than Kleins even witt arc scarring on the cutters. Best strippers ever.

These are very high quality, strips wires easily, crimps easily, locks well, very versatile tool

These things are made of the highest quality materials I have ever seen in a pair of wire strippers. I really like these things. The blades are sharp and they feel like they will last forever with heavy daily usage. I know they are expensive, but, if you are like me you have bought all the cheap ones and were disappointed in yourself for not having bought higher quality ones sooner. Save yourself the money on all the disposable ones from the other big brands and just get these they might be the last ones you’ll ever buy.

Hey everybody, This is my product review of the Knipex 13 71 8 wire stripper tool. This tool seems to perform better on thicker gauge wire such as 14 or 16AWG THHN single conductor stranded wire. It does perform well on 18AWG solid fire alarm wire also but not any better or worse than my Klein Tools slim drop forged wire strippers. A strike against the Knipex tool compared to the Klein Tools wire stripper is that the Knipex does not have a crimper built into the tool. The Klein Tools slim drop forged wire strippers does have a built-in crimper although I feel the crimper portion is upside down on the tool.

CONS: For a hand tool with a return spring, I expect the spring to do its job unassisted. But this one was sticking closed out of the box when in the unlocked position. Root cause seemed to be dirt or some kind of grit! A little WD40 and a jet of compressed air plus some light operation of the handles fixed that. Lastly, no universal crimper! Had to buy the Knipex crimper pliers to address that. PROS: Lightweight but heavyweight in utility. Strippers are sharp, well marked and make clean circular cuts without damaging the conductor. The cable cutter makes quick and clean work of larger copper cables. Now my dedicated Knipex cable cutters are gonna be framed on my shop wall! Surprisingly, the box was not crushed on this one!
