There’s one empty circle and you push the colored balls around utilizing the empty space to match the color of the ball with the ring outside the circle. There’s a sponge center in the ball that allows the colored balls to slide from one space to the next when you press on them. The adults like to play as well as my kids (ages 8 and 6).

How do you open the cube?

I could find no way to open the ball. You have to try to move the balls around through the holes to set up the puzzle. Save your mind, your fingers, and your money. Don't get it.

Is the foam supposed to be removed in order to play it?

No-the purpose of the foam is just to allow the colored balls to be pushed around. It is not removable/accessible to the child. My 5 year old grandson loves this ball, similar to those number tile puzzles but a little more complex. Not as challenging as Rubik's Cube which is what we were going for.
